In South Carolina, the 17,400 students in the Rock Hill School District, 20 miles south of Charlotte, N.C., will be in school on Monday. Making up for snow days will also put them in school on Presidents’ Day and Memorial Day.

“There’s no intention on our part to dishonor Martin Luther King in any way,” said a district spokeswoman, Elaine Baker. She said that even black families had contacted the district to support the move and that Dr. King would not have had a problem with students learning on his holiday.

That is not good enough for State Representative John R. King, whose district includes Rock Hill.

“The amount of snow has nothing to do with it; this is a state holiday,” he said. “I think it’s blatant. I think it’s disrespectful. As the only African-American legislator in my area, it’s a slap in my face and in the faces of people who look like me.”

Oh for cripes sake! The students even agreed to this! They had a choice, go to school in order to make up the days, or add them on at the end of the year! Guess which one they chose?

My husband has to work today.  His company is full of racists.

What's the big deal?  It also said they will be in school on President's Day and Memorial Day.

Whay a bunch of sorry assed POS. They could have made those kids go in on a Saturday as well. I remember having to do that while in High Scholl. Nothing worse then spending your day off because of a snow day at school. It wouldn't surprise me that if the Teachers Unions had it their way they would have picked to end it at the end of the school year just to get something extra in the paycheck.

My district is 60% other than white. Guess wheather we had school today or not.

About Charlotte NC schools. Heard on the radio just a little bit ago that the school district there spends twice as much on black students as they do on white students....and the white students still out perform the black students. I guess they need to throw more money and free lunches at the black students.

For crap sake, the kids in my SC county had to make up the day but...they were out for a scheduled teacher day Thursday and Friday.  How many 5 day weekends do non-teachers get?

Last Monday was a teacher work day here in this SC school district, so that one was a freebie but the other 4 are going to have to be made up.

I guess they'll not get "spring break week". ....and what's with high schools having "spring break wee". We didn't get a week off in the middle of the spring semester.

We didn't get a 10 day break at Christmas time when I was a kid either.

Dear DUmmies--the only reason I had yesterday off (with pay, I might add) is that the NRC rules set forth dictated that I have that day off due to working 72 hours in the previous six days, and would have been in violation had I not been given a day off.

Oh, and NO company I've worked for since I left the Navy has offered it as a matter of course.  When I worked for SCE it was an "optional" floating holiday, along with Good Friday, Cesar Chavez, and Columbus Day, IIRC.
