STANFORD, Calif. - President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.

It's "the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government" to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said.

That news, first reported by CNET, effectively pushes the department to the forefront of the issue, beating out other potential candidates including the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. The move also is likely to please privacy and civil liberties groups that have raised concerns in the past over the dual roles of police and intelligence agencies.

The announcement came at an event today at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, where U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and Schmidt spoke.

The Obama administration is currently drafting what it's calling the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, which Locke said will be released by the president in the next few months. (An early version was publicly released last summer.)

Just think of being issued your own , permanent IP address at birth that you can't change and must use. IPv6 has sufficient address space.

Current IP addresses or rather the allocation thereof , even the IPv6 ones are so dynamic as to be worthless for such a thing.

ETA : Just think of it as your own personal MAC address.

I don't know how many progressives you know, but the ones I know are livid about this.  You'll note that the famously pro-business Department of Commerce is getting the job.  This idea is fascist, and I am not sure which law authorizes it, but I would strongly support its repeal.

Progressives are livid about the healthcare bill too, because instead of giving them their singlepayer system (yet), it just mandated everyone to buy insurance and made healthcare more expensive. The progressives in power do not care about their own base. They see everyone as subjects.

You're absolutely right about several things here.  I strongly favor repeal of that law.  I wrote a number of letters, even made several phone calls, trying to get members of the House Progressive Caucus to stand their ground and vote against that law, but they were good soldiers and caved to Obama's demands.  They sold out their constituents.  I don't deny that.

Personally, I don't see any progressives "in power."  And I have no idea how they "see" their constituents, but it doesn't really matter because the progressives in government have no power--none that they're willing to use, in any event.

Although I recognize that many people want to call them progressives (because that's useful to maintain the divisive left-right narrative in this country), the intelligent people on this board have read enough of DU to know that progressives are furious with both of them, and that neither of them will stand up for progressive values when push comes to shove.

Illegals that break the law don't have to carry any form of identification on their possession though. What a joke this administration is.
