LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - If you are male and a Led Zeppelin fan, chances are you may be leaning toward voting Republican in the U.S. presidential election, according to a survey of rock radio fans released on Wednesday.

The Jacobs Media's Media/Technology Web Poll IV of more than 27,000 respondents cited stronger than expected interest in the November 2008 election among fans of rock, classic rock, and alternative radio stations.

It also found that John McCain, the Republican candidate for U.S. president, was the top pick for the Oval Office for men and classic rock partisans -- those people who tune in to stations playing music from the "original classic rock era" of 1964 to 1975, comprised of bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd.

Jacobs Media said the survey, conducted among 69 U.S. rock-formatted stations in markets as diverse as Los Angeles and Knoxville to Buffalo, found 84 percent of the respondents planned to vote in the November election.

"People are clearly engaged by this election, even rockers. A lot of stations tend to shy away from politics because it's so polarizing, but this data suggests they'd better find a way to talk about politics this fall to keep listeners interested," said Fred Jacobs, president of Jacobs Media. He said the company threw the political questions in as an afterthought and was surprised by the results.

I'm 39 years old. I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin, BOC, Pink Floyd, Rush, and so on. And I still love to listen to these bands--on occasion.

But if you're in my general age group and you're still listening to your local Clear Channel classic rock station as your main source of music, the station that only plays songs that were in the top 10 way back in the day, the station that still thinks it's cool to play AOR stuff like Comfortably Numb 3 times a day 30 years after its release...well, it could be argued that you're stuck in the past. And that begins to approach the definition of conservatism (and maybe a lack of imagination too). I still love to hear Free Bird, but on my own schedule, which works out to be about once every 3 years or so. I listen to newer music. Hell, I've learned to love much, much older music, for that matter (Django Reinhardt, anyone?). So it comes as no surprise to me that someone who solely subsists on the Doobie Brothers and Disraeli Gears or whatever would be likely to vote for McCain. These are the same people that want a simple, black and white world where the US are the good guys with the white hats and we kick ass and take names and go to monster truck shows.

This doesn't detract from old rock & roll at all. It speaks more of simpletons with no imagination. And if you're in your teens or twenties and you've just discovered Zeppelin and listen to them all the time, this post isn't referring to you. Congrats on finding a great old band and grooving to their catalog (maybe I'll be lucky enough to see you at the Plant/Krauss show). And if you're my age or older, and you're going back and listening to the deep tracks, this post isn't about you. It's about the stuck-in-the-rut people; and they're by and large Republican-leaning.

For a group of people who are so intelligent they can tell from the results of a survey what motivates others to listen to a certain type of music and how that effects their world view, you'd think they could take care of the simple things in life, like .... oh, let's say ... keeping a job or paying their bills on time.

Hard rock and Heavy Metal fans don't sit around feeling sorry for themselves either. We are more of a take charge, grab the bull by the balls personality. A whole lot more positive than the current generation it seems. Ted Nugent is a prime example.

Now Grunge Rock seems to fit the Liberal or Democrat stereotype: People suck, World sucks, I'm gonna' commit suicide.

Umm, if you were a contemporary of bands like Floyd and Led, you likely had some leanings in your youth that were more in line with the "counterculture" of the late 60's/early 70's. Consequently, if one were "stuck in the past" he or she would be a sad, aging, hippy burnout case like we see so often at The Hive. Most people however, grew up and out of that stage and while we still enjoy the music, we've moved on from the Rebel Without A Clue mindset prevalent among the Left. Hence our conservative politics. I would argue that it is you who never developed beyond your infantile fantasies of making the world one big hippy commune and joined the real world.

I'm a little too old for the concert scene, but all of those bands have individual songs I like, mainly for the guitar riffs. The hilarious thing is they have a sheeplike following for all their songs about socialism and anarchy while simultaneously working for their "corporate masters" and raking in millions of dollars from their pimply-faced Che-wannabe fans.

although, i cant imagine why people would rather listen to groups who actually played instruments, wrote their own songs and could sing without being over produced, and loved the genre rather than the pop crapolla the 'music' industry has been pumping out since the 90s..

I happen to like someone who would be considered heretical, if I didn't purchase the proper C-69 credits from the VRWC . . . Springsteen.  He's on tour right now, but he doesn't come out and commit an entire set to his political leanings.  He knows that there's Republicans and Conservatives who like his music, too, andhe doesn't want to lose access to their money.  So, he may keep his opinions "toned down."  It did a lot of good for John Skerry in '04.

I love the guy's music, but I cannot stand his political views.

So how does that explain Neil Young, the Rip Van Winkle of the bong water and Woodstock crowd, suddenly reawakening in time to protest their long hoped for new Vietnam? I guess one could say David Crosby has evolved...I mean at least he's not assaulting us with sappy folk songs now...he's moved on to inseminating musical dykes' (who, ironically assault us with sappy folk songs) "significant others".

If these people ever wake up from their stereotype dreamland they'll be shocked at how much the world has evolved. I come out of the "punk" generation, my husband is the classic rock guy and I turned right before he did. My ipod has everything from Elvis to Better than Ezra to Megadeth to Rob Zombie, Spoon, and The Clash on it. I'm just as likely to be listening to Rachmaninov as I am the Ramones.

This doesn't detract from old rock & roll at all. It speaks more of simpletons with no imagination. And if you're in your teens or twenties and you've just discovered Zeppelin and listen to them all the time, this post isn't referring to you. Congrats on finding a great old band and grooving to their catalog (maybe I'll be lucky enough to see you at the Plant/Krauss show). Boy, sure are a lot of qualifiers there...wouldn't want to offend while establishing our progressive creds there, Boffo. BTW, no one says "grooving" anymore...it's SO 60's. This is where that big superiority chip on their shoulder always falls off...they assume conservatives listen to one thing, have sex in one position, never do anything they would define as fun, and don't recognize moral issues beyond the sexually charged ones. They reveal in comments by several there in that thread just how narrow minded and entrenched in stereotypes they are. Enlightened my ass! I bet I have 10 to 15 years on the character that posted that and actually liked those bands when it wasn't the ****ing popular thing to like. Nowadays, admittedly, its nothing to like NIN--a lot of people do, but back when industrial was just getting its first life coming out of places like Detroit and other rust belt cities, with these really angry blends of music, they were not well received by the larger public. We saw NIN in a little shit hole in Baltimore the first time. I happen to be friends with a lot of those folks from those days, some liberals, but not DU stripe liberals. I can't stand RATM.  And it pisses me off that Audioslave is so good.  But it doesn't matter, I still won't buy their albums.  The thought that a dime of my money may some how end up in the Free Mumia coffers sickens me.

Cause the got rid of that ***hole rapper Zack Dela Cockroacha! The band RATM is very good and Tom Morello is fantastic. You can't deny "Freedom" is a great tune can ya' ? If you've ever seen any of his interviews about his guitar setup, not his political views, you'll see a highly intelligent person.
