Er! Dearborn is not Detroit. The Motown Outhouse obviously isn't a MENSA member.

BTW. My wife is a member of MENSA. I glance through the national rag that comes with membership. The regional mag is a waste of paper. Once a year (or so) they have a issue of the careers of members. All I can say is there are a bunch of under achieving burger flippers that are members. To their credit, they're not as liberal as you would think.

There are better reasons to go to Michigan. It's really beautiful up there and reminds me of a colder Florida unless its summer. The lakes are incredible and as someone who grew up next to water, I love it! The suburbs north and outside of Detroit are actually quite lovely(and pretty conservative).  :-) Really, are we that narrowly focused as conservatives to color the entire state by one craphole city? Detroit may have to be changed by what is outside of it, moving in.

And I'm giving that state up north a lot of begrudging love considering I live in a Columbus suburb. It hurts!  :-) (I actually find the people a lot more pleasant then the ones in central Ohio too--but I'm a Floridian--I think water really helps to make people less assholish for some reason :-)

The skyline of Detroit from Windsor is nice -- the casinos and jazz clubs in Windsor are far better than the ones in Detroit.

I like the skyline coming into Detroit, but would never set foot in the city--ok, maybe the zoo :-) I really like their zoo. Hopefully someday the city council and all the subterfuge gets booted out and the city can be revitalized PRIVATELY. It's a shame to watch it get torn apart by lowlives. I take no joy in it...I think if anything we as Americans should be disgusted and disturbed by what amounts to 3rd world corruption given an avenue by liberal politics can do to the once shining jewels in our nation. Detroit should be a reason to bash a number of things that are currently exalted(inner city AA culture, political corruption used by minorities in inner cities, and liberal politics), but should not be a reflection on Michigan as a whole. I've asked this question before(not here) at what point does either the state politic or the national have authority to go in and bulldozer out a city. Detroit seems like its getting to that point, at least areas of it. How far will bodies above it allow it to go before military rule moves in? I've wondered that--how far would the greater political leaders allow ONE city whether its that one or any others to go before it cuts the poison off and out so as not to infect other areas.

Went to the Readers Digest article.  There are pics.
1)  An atrociously crumbling building and a broken-down car with graffiti all over it, touted as "art."
2)  Some sort of play going on, with a handful of people sitting on cafeteria seats, lots of empty seats.
3)  A Westin hotel.
4)  A Mexicantown shop, with lots of tacky skeleton figurines.
5)  Six baskets of apples.
6)  People riding bikes.  The commentary used the word "foodalicious," which made my head explode.
7)  A very ugly abandoned industrial building, now used to store the artsy-fartsy DUmmies.
8)  The Motown Historical Museum, a picture of a recording studio.
9)  A chili dog. 

Having taken the virtual tour, I think I'm OK.  Detroit is the ashtray of the nation, and it's thanks to corrupt, leftwing politics, a culture of dependency and low expectations.   No amount of cutesy travel writing changes that.

Montreal is nice if you're there in the summer, which is the second and third weeks of July, and if you can find someone who admits to speaking English.
