Most Historical Thursdays deal with cold, soulless machines or vast man-made structures. But this week we’re going to take a look at something a bit more adorable, cuddly and utterly devastating. About a century after the first convicts arrived Down Under, they grew bored with shooting each other and wanted to try their hunting skills on fluffy-tailed mammals. The 1859 introduction of 12 rabbits to Australia led to one of the most unprecedented and destructive ecological disasters in history. But it was still pretty cute.In addition to being the number one cause for species loss in the country, rabbits have wreaked irreversible damage on the landscape. Feasting by the millions on native plants, the mass exposure left the topsoil vulnerable to erosion, which takes hundreds of years to naturally repair. Just take a look at this before and after picture.
