A Date Which Will Live In Infamy
« on: December 07, 2010, 03:59:00 AM »

Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, members of the Senate and the House of Representatives: Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its Government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night the Japanese attacked Wake Island.

And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.

But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces—with the unbounding determination of our people—we will gain the inevitable triumph—so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.

Thanks for the reminder, Tx.

God alone suffices.

Yes, Dec. 7th, 1941. Always remember the sacrifices needed to defend the nation from this assault.

My love and respect to those who sacrificed, served and lived during those trying times.  To the greatest generation  :blowkiss:

I am glad you did this remembrance.  As each year passes so do the survivors.

Was in Pearl for the 50th anniversary.  Saw GHWB leading the memorial from my barracks room.

Quiet ain't the word to describe that base that day.

Maybe--but only because it's the first day of Muharram:

The only recent thread I found at the DUmp was one suggesting that Pearl Harbor was either MIHOP or LIHOP to get us into the war.

Besides the obvious reminder of all that Pearl Harbor Day signifies...this day always reminds me of my parents.

Both were stationed in Hawaii, during WWII. My mother, was a Navy Lt, a nurse who took care of burn patients throughout The War. My dad was a Navy Pharmacist's Mate.Among other duties, he participated in the last group of Navy personnel trying to recover bodies from the sunken ships.

December 7th was always a very somber day in our house when I was growing up. It was a day that they both  seemed to retreat into their memories.

God Bless all those who were lost that day, those who served then and now. They were and are the reason that we Americans still live in freedom.

"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

I'm watching "The real story of Pearl Harbor" on the History HD channel right now.
Very moving!
When I lived in the Marshall Islands, I traveled through Oahu eight times, each visiting Pearl just to visit and pay condolences to a grandfather.

As an aside - have any of your relatives seen and been up-close to the fireball of an atomic bomb explosion?

I know of some that did - snicker...

(We didn't start it but by God we sure DID end it...)

How sad that there are some people that think this was some kind of MIHOP or LIHOP like 9/11 was supposed to be. In case you Dummy CT are lurking and happened to forget your lessons in History,FDR was a DEMOCRAT and your saying he let this country come under attack is about as low as anyone can get. I have no love for most of what FDR did but He at least had more balls then the current occupant of the WH.

According to James Carville, so does Hillary Clinton.
Gawd, can youall imagine Obama attempting to rally the nation after a devastating and brutal attack like Pearl Harbor?  I can't imagine him doing so at all.  I almost think he'd go on an apology tour again. :banghead:

He would say, "We can absorb this attack." and then he would start to disarm to show the Japanese and the Germans that we won't attack: cause Pearl Harbor was just a misunderstanding. And then he would start talks.
