Despite unusual bipartisan support on Capitol Hill and a strong push from the Obama administration, the bill could still die because there might not be enough time for the usual haggling between the Senate and House of Representatives, which passed its own version last year. Top House Democrats said that they would consider simply passing the Senate version to speed approval.

Both versions of the bill would grant the F.D.A. new powers to recall tainted foods, increase inspections, demand accountability from food companies and oversee farming. But neither version would consolidate overlapping functions at the Department of Agriculture and nearly a dozen other federal agencies that oversee various aspects of food safety, making coordination among the agencies a continuing challenge.

While food-safety advocates and many industry groups preferred the House version because it includes more money for inspections and fewer exceptions from the rules it sets out, most said the Senate bill was far better than nothing.

Anytime this administration talks of a new "bill", the hair on the back of my neck stands up. I wonder what else is in it? :banghead:

S.510 Food Safety bill now dead in the water due to blue slip mistake

It is now being revealed that US Senators slipped up in a big way when passing the Food Safety Modernization Act on Tuesday: They added what are effectively "new taxes" into the bill, and according to the U.S. Constitution, only the House of Representatives can initiate legislation requiring new taxes.

Thus, the House is now obliged to give this food safety legislation the so-called "blue slip," meaning that it rejects the law and sends it back to the Senate for yet another vote. This would take time and effort, of course, and the Democrats have very little of either remaining in their lame duck session.

The sad thing is, this isn't the first time he's made this mistake.

I was curious and checked the Senate's vacation calendar.  They have yet to schedule a Christmas break.

I heard this on the news last night coming home from work.  I shouted THANK YOU GOD!!!! in the car.  There was some pretty scary shit in that bill, that once again, nobody read.  It looked like a done deal, with lots of unintended consequences.

WHY WON'T THESE ASSHOLES READ THESE BILLS?

They know what's in them, but for plausible deniability purposes claim before the public and the media that they don't (which also seems to have no significant ramification to their reelection bids re: Nancy Pelosi).

With people like Sanders and Kucinich around, you never know but I think you're right.  They take a bunch of talking points from some left-wing think tank and some moon eyed intern gets to re-write them into legalese so they can include it in the bill and the assholes that submit it for a vote never see the damn thing.

Meanwhile, said Congress-critter's office released some PR blather about how great it is and nobody is any the wiser for having voted for it.

Especially under this imposter's administration. I trust very few of them.
