21. yup. it turned into a depression some time ago

In order to dig my way out of the recession, I took on de...er, invested in myself, and went back to school for a new degree, in Med Lab technology. With 100% employment rate and worldwide shortage, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Now I'm approaching my final semester -- unpaid, 40 hours/week in hospital clinical training.

Only suddenly the hospitals are taking half the students they used to. Oh, and they're laying off. There aren't any jobs at the back end.

My little boat is scheduled to sink next summer when I graduate and can't find work, unless I can dig enough clams or worms to support my family and pay off my student loans.

30. Medical jobs were the shining hope for years. Now, as you observe, even they're being hit.

I'm not sure how to explain that. Presumably there is no shortage of customers.

48. There is not a shortage of sick people. Just a shortage of people who can afford medical care

10 years ago it was standing room only in my doctors office. Had people waiting outside the office in the lobby waiting for a chair. Now when I go there its usually me and one or two other people sitting in the waiting room at the most.

Business is way down.

As a "greedy" SSDI recipient I'm up to my eyeballs in recession. Everywhere I turn prices are going up - gas, food, Medigap premium, utilities - and I'm stuck in 2008 as far as my benifits are concerned. The COLA calculations are a big bad joke.

Sooooo...your kid has a headache, high fever, and muscle aches. You can't get the fever to stop spiking and he's becoming lethargic. You decide (in spite of the lousy Obama economy) to take Jr. to the emergency room. They have to treat you and you don't have to pay. The doctor suspects meningitis and wants to do a spinal tap and send the fluids to the lab for testing. You're going to say "no, we'll just see how it goes because we cant afford it"?

Or here's a thought: maybe it's not "the economy" stupid, but with the new health care law looming like a big black cloud over a flood zone (is black cloud racist?) all segments of the medical industry are cutting back and holding off on hiring because they still have no idea how they'll be affected.

Indeed.  With their beliefs that all companies are evil, and the profit motive is nauseating, their attitude will shine right through, if they're lucky enough to get an interview.
