Second-hand smoke kills 600,000 people a year: Study

Second-hand smoke globally kills more than 600,000 people each year, accounting for 1% of all deaths worldwide, according to a new study.

The alarming findings - published on Thursday in the British medical journal Lancet - are based on a survey of 192 countries in 2004.

Researchers estimated that annually second-hand smoke causes about 379,000 deaths from heart disease, 165,000 deaths from lower respiratory disease, 36,900 deaths from asthma and 21,400 deaths from lung cancer.

Children account for about 165,000 of the deaths, according to the researchers.

How “public health”, media and the University of Minnesota con you about passive smoke "dangers" – once again - January 5, 2004 -- The ink was not yet dry on the latest piece of trash science on passive smoke, and a few days ago the mass media had already rushed to spread the disinformation all over the world. We refer to the latest “study” by the University of Minnesota on passive smoking, which is reported like this in the first lines of the ABC News article we are linked to: “Researchers at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, found elevated levels of a cancer-causing agent, NNAL, in the urine of nonsmokers after they spent just four hours in a commercial casino. Researchers also found elevated levels of cotinine, a byproduct of nicotine, in the samples. Both NNAL and cotinine are specific to tobacco and were not found in the nonsmokers' urine before their casino visit.”

You need to go no further, as this is already sufficient: the rest is more of the usual anecdotal and rhetorical hate trash, without foundation. Let’s see how “public health”, the mass media and the University of Minnesota con you about passive smoke “dangers” once again. Like most of the productions of the “industry of hate & fear”, this “study” is based on false and distorted information.

It is preposterous that those “scientists” who promote junk science studies such as this one are not exposed for the charlatans they really are. Instead, they pass as if they were “scholars” dedicated to saving humanity, and they get big dollars and media credence! The devastating part is that this incredible distortion is not an isolated case, but today it is almost the standard used for the most disparate issues, from pesticides, to plastic toys, to passive smoke, to food. No let's NOT take into consideration the effect of other gasses in the air such as those from cars, buses, trucks, trains, coal burning power plants and factories..... Or the fact the we use hazardous chemicals throughout our jobs, homes and other places.

Now, all of that said, I will suggest that manufactured cigarettes seem to have more of an adverse effect on me since they made it a requirement to put that self extinguishing chemical crap in them. Also, I smoke handmade cigarettes that are from natural tobacco and nothing else. They don't stink or smell nearly as bad as commercially manufactured cigarettes.

And this thread just confirms even more how much I love it here.

I heard a story from a patron at my local pub the other day: He told me that another bigger bar a bit outside of town is building a bar inside their bar. Since there now has to be ad ons for it to be legal since the SHS bill in Wisconsin, this bar decided to build a seperate room inside their bar with a pool table, dartboard, stools, a sitting area, and shelves with beer/booze on them just like an actual bar....secluded somewhat to abide the stupid law. And according to this guy, there's also a TV in thaere, and it's a pretty darn big smoking area!

I think it's a nice loopholed, but the point is, the owners never should have had to come up with it. And I'm sure the suits in the Mad City are going to raise all kinds of hell, but guess what? When you push the public into a corner on a bullshit item like this, what do you think they're going to do? Give up?  Bastardize basic rights on a lie, and the people wil retaliate. That's just common sense. These beurocrats are already costing decent people good money they shouldn't have to shell out purely because they dislike something.

Well after smoking myself silly for 40 years, I did have a stroke.  My partner still smokes, and sometimes it hurts to breathe, even though an air purifier is on 24 hours a day.

That's my experience.

However, I also had very high cholesterol that clogged the arteries to my brain.  But then---I had to have leg by-pass surgery because my leg arteries were blocked up also.

Smoking and high cholesterol haven't killed me YET - but they both are trying! 

Just today I read a story that was in reference to Obama's split lip -  they mentioned he still smokes and has high cholesterol according to his last scheduled doctor exam.

My paternal grandparents lived into their 90's - never smoked, never drank alcohol, but who is to say what their history was.  The next generation were either teetotalers or alcoholics.


My maternal grandparents - totally different - many alcoholics who died way too young.

Mix that up.

Anyone have an actual link to the abstract of the study?  In almost every case I have run across, the actual studies are far more muted, cautious, and precise with their *actual* conclusions, while accounts in the popular press are distorted and exaggerated to such a degree till you really can't call them anything else but lies.  I can't think of any case actually, where the press represented the information contained in a scientific study, in a responsible way.  I seriously can't.

The popular press makes science interesting and exciting by lying about it, plain and simple.
