Dogs are cleverer than cats because their friendly character has helped them develop bigger brains, a study set to end the argument between pet lovers has shown. The intelligence of “a man’s best friend” has evolved at a greater rate than the less social cat over millions of years, scientists at Oxford University have claimed.

It was often thought that the feline pet was smarter than its canine counterpart because it needed less attention but researchers have discovered that cat’s brains are smaller because they are less social.

I have one of both and I agree that the dog is smarter than the cat -- but not necessarily easier!

Had this Siamese when the kids were small, she, full grown and did nothing but eat sleep and crap.

Navy Housing, one night I got a knock at the back door and my friends Husband was there.  His uniform was turned backward and he had just come from his Chief Initiation.

My Hubby was on a 3 month patrol and my  being taken by surprise, the new Chief  pushed his way in to tell me all about his advancement.  He was my neighbors husband and I knew his wife very well.

He came into my home as if he owned it and opened my fridge to get a beer.    Out of no where came the useless cat. 

I was in a bind here was my friends husband ordering me about as he was 3 sheets into the wind and i had  2 baby's in the back of the house.

I had no problem when this 15 pound Siamese came into the room.  She sat right in front of the drunk not moving a hair, just stared him down. 

 MEAN WHILE OUR LITTLE DOG WAS ALL OVER HIM LICKING AND HAPPY TO SEE HIM AGAIN.

The fat cat did not move, just sat there eye balling him.  The cat made him very nervous, he said he needed to go to the head but the cat got in front of him and he left because he could not take a pee in my house.

My useless cat knew, and protected us, the dog was useless as she knew the guy.

Cat VS Dog, depends on the situation and how each animal perceives what is going on.

Maybe, just maybe, the cat's litter box was full and he needed to take a dump. Or he was thirsty. Seeing as your guest was standing in front of the fridge, the cat probably wanted a beer too.

Smarts ain't got nothing to do with this one, Vesta. The cat is all about himself.

  Perhaps you may be right.

Eupher could be the cat was picking up fear and confusion from me.  You know how it is total confusion when friends begin to act odd, ----especially when a good friends Husband or Wife comes on to you.---What is a person to do.

Easy enough to back out in Public when this happens, you can just leave, but when home alone and there is a knock on the door and you are barged in on, be it your best friends wife waving a bottle of booze or your best friends husband come to call---things can get nasty.

Friends are difficult to find, they trust you, you trust them----now what.-----Does anyone want to get a call from a friend to tell them their spouse is drunk and will not leave the house??

What to do in this situation for a female that by size cannot escort a friends Husband/boyfriend out the door.

Don't tell me that to open the door in the first place is wrong, we do open the door to friends when we know them, could be lots of reasons they need to come in.

Once inside if you are alone, then it could be for many reason's have a death in the family, they need you to help them with a family medical problem, they need to tell you about a thief in the neighborhood or just to call 911 for their parents health problems.  If you know the person knocking on the door most people will let them in.

My Cat knew something was wrong not from knowing the neighbor but from the ----shall I say it---VIBES I put out.

The dog was just happy to see an old friend but the cat  who hid when company came was another thing.

Cats are strange and mysterious, , we cannot train them as a dog nor can we get a grip on their mind set as we can dogs. 

I just happend to have gotten a kitten that grew into an adult doing not much but, when the time came for her to pick up stuff,--- fear and confusion she had never felt before from her family, she was front and center.

I believe you nailed it Lamb, your MUTT just may be smarter then a purebread.  Healthier also.

From what I have seen and read all pedigreed dogs have been engineered to do a specific job.  Yours being a Mutt with the breeds of 2-3 other breeds in their DNA has a better chance at learning types of behavior then one breed to be just a lap dog or a hunter.

Dogs for sure, but we'll never know whether you're right, for two reasons:

1.  There are some pretty damned dumb dogs, but they're also lazy, so it's impossible to tell whether their inability to do anything is due to stupidity, or laziness.  Think of them as Dogocrats.

2.  The smartest cat would never let anyone know it was the smartest cat, because it would be naturally sneaky about showing all its cards, and suspicious about why you might want to know how smart it was in the first place.

Dogs are true to humans and will follow you to the ends of the earth and starve with you if it comes to that. It might eat you if you die first but I would hope so and would do the same if the tide was turned. A cat could care less if you live or die and if you don't feed it would be gone in no time and you could piss up a rope for all it cared. Cats will piss and shit and puke all over your house. I have had dogs that while I was at work would hold it till they almost burst. I would come home after a long day and let them out and they would get 2 ft out the door and piss for what seemed for eternity, [poor dog]. Cats on the other hand have a litter box and still piss all over and are forever puking! I have 2 cats and cant wait till they die and will never have another. When my dogs die I get as depressed as when a beloved parent or friend dies. Dogs are truly "mans best friend". Cats are like liberals, only there for the hand out.
