While they may have been a one hit wonder, their influence on rock was pretty strong:

Iron Butterfly....

I can't believe that nobody's mentioned them yet.

When I worked at my campus radio station, when we needed to hit the bathroom for a "throne sit," we put that on.

The only radio station around here at the time that was popular was KZEW.... They used to play half an LP at a time, NO commercial interruptions....

Some thesedon't iconic.

They're enjoyable and many of them are talented but they don't strike me as iconic. They're more products of the icons.

Roxette?

Hey, the ballads from Roxette are among my favorites.  Theme song from Pretty Woman wasn't even their best work. :hammer:yourself :rotf:

I have here, in my hand, a list.

These are, in my opinion, the iconic bands of modern Rock 'n Roll. This isn't an estimation of talent. Admittedly, some of the bands are rather lacking in talent but they speak to the overall sound of rock 'n roll. The genre was not only built by them but it would have been diminished by their absence.

The Eagles
George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers
Joan Jett
Metallica
The Doors
Led Zepplin
Pink Floyd
AC/DC
Van Halen
Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Co. James Gurley (lead for the band) invented acid guitar. The band put her on the "map". (fixed)

Who else belongs here?
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

The unobtainable is unknown at Zombo.com

Iconic in the terms of rock and roll? I would say Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and guys like that. Maybe Elvis You know the guys that broke the ice of rhythm and blues and made rock and roll. I know you said modern rock and for me that started at Woodstock and and from that point on for me was defined by talent. I grew up in Woodstock NY and had close contact with all the local talent. I partied at Dylan's house on Ohayo MT, got drunk with Joplin in the Sled Hill Cafe and sung around the campfire with John Sebastian so I know a little bit about talent. Alvin Lee rocked the house at Woodstock and plays the most awesome guitar in all of music history. I call him Iconic in the terms of modern day rock and roll. I would call Metallica, AC/DC, Black sabbath heavy Metal.

Uh hello now, don't forget these lads from Liverpool England.   I heard they were pretty good.  :)

Rickenbacher guitar sound
Sitar guitar sound
Excellent songwriting
Superb harmonies
groundbreaking music studio techniques

To me, there is no question that the Beatles are the greatest rock band and there will never be another group as talented as them.

The Band
Yeah! I forgot Garth Hudson and Levon Helm are neighbors and customers of mine. Levon is for sure an American treasure and super talent. Had his problems with drugs and alcohol as did Garth. Icons? well they' sure did have something and still do. I loved The Band!

I'm jealous! I saw Levon play in Philly at the Electric Factory a couple of years ago. It was an amazing show! To think the guy survived throat cancer and can still sing like that.
