The only radio station around here at the time that was popular was KZEW.... They used to play half an LP at a time, NO commercial interruptions....

The Doors "The End" is about 10-11 minuts long and the entire album "Heaven and Hell" by Vangelis has one side thats over 21 minutes long even though it list several songs on that side it goes non stop.

Iconic in the terms of rock and roll? I would say Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and guys like that. Maybe Elvis You know the guys that broke the ice of rhythm and blues and made rock and roll. I know you said modern rock and for me that started at Woodstock and and from that point on for me was defined by talent. I grew up in Woodstock NY and had close contact with all the local talent. I partied at Dylan's house on Ohayo MT, got drunk with Joplin in the Sled Hill Cafe and sung around the campfire with John Sebastian so I know a little bit about talent. Alvin Lee rocked the house at Woodstock and plays the most awesome guitar in all of music history. I call him Iconic in the terms of modern day rock and roll. I would call Metallica, AC/DC, Black sabbath heavy Metal.

I'm jealous! I saw Levon play in Philly at the Electric Factory a couple of years ago. It was an amazing show! To think the guy survived throat cancer and can still sing like that.
