The Iconic bands of Rock 'n Roll
« on: November 20, 2010, 09:55:42 AM »
I have here, in my hand, a list.

These are, in my opinion, the iconic bands of modern Rock 'n Roll. This isn't an estimation of talent. Admittedly, some of the bands are rather lacking in talent but they speak to the overall sound of rock 'n roll. The genre was not only built by them but it would have been diminished by their absence.

The Eagles
George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers
Joan Jett
Metallica
The Doors
Led Zepplin
Pink Floyd
AC/DC
Van Halen
Janis Joplin

Who else belongs here?
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

Deep Purple.  Judas Priest.  Iron Maiden.  Rush.  Jethro Tull.

For newer groups, I might throw in Megadeth and Pantera.

It was hard to come up with any others, as you guys all did a fine job.
R.I.P. LC and Crockspot.  Miss you guys.

ELO, Bowie (two of my major 70's influences)

And while we're at it...The Beatles.

They started it all. All of the bands mentioned above thanked The Beatles for their success. NONE of them would exist without THE BEATLES!

Revolver and Rubber Soul were the first breakthrough. Then came Sgt. Pepper which turned the entire music industry upside down.

It IS the GREATEST Rock album of all time!

Some thesedon't iconic.

They're enjoyable and many of them are talented but they don't strike me as iconic. They're more products of the icons.

Roxette?

 :hammer:

You know Megadeth and Pantera have been around since the 80's, right?

As I graduated from HS with most of Pantera, I like to think of them as "not old."  I saw them perform in a garage.  Can I cling to that little bit of youth?

Frack!

Grand Funk Railroad!
14 gold (500,000 sold) and 10 platinum (1million+ sold) albums! The critics hated them, they SOLD OUT Shea Stadium in less than one day - The Beatles sold our Shea in over one week!

WE'RE AN AMERICAN BAND!

Deep Purple
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - like Pink Floyd, possessed a very distinct iconic individual sound.
Steppenwolf, seriously? Take a listen:
Quote
Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space

I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space

Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die

Born to be wild
Born to be wild

While they originated in the 60's (Easy Rider), they transitioned into the 70's very well. The FIRST time EVER, EVER the phrase "Heavy Metal" was coined then uttered! That is where it came from - Heavy Metal - and many AFTERWORDS adopted it. Is that NOT iconic?

What the hell happened to Foghat?

Me too, along with Boston and other bands, Cotton Bowl Jam, New Year's 1980.  Got a huge contact high from all the dope being smoked.
Heart was the last act, and they were great.

Forgot to mention ABBA.  Love their music, even though maybe it's not all rock and roll.

I saw Pantera at the Star Theatre in Downtown Denison back in Jan of 86........
come to think of it, Tots, that should have been the year you graduated HS.......  :fuelfire:
