TALLAHASSEE -- The Florida Legislature christened a new era of conservative government Tuesday, flexing its newfound muscle by overriding eight vetoes in a half-day special session.

It also put Congress on notice that it intends to reform the state's multibillion-dollar Medicaid system, and berated members of the Florida Supreme Court for overreaching their authority.

The historic override of Gov. Charlie Crist's vetoes came after the House and Senate swore in 54 new members and named Sen. Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, and Rep. Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, as their presiding officers for a two-year term.

folks the ride has just started.... I will not be shocked to see ahem 10th amendment remedies soon.... we are getting closer and closer to that just pre-civil war environment.

History does repeat itself in not so amusing ways... and it is easier in a country that loves NOT to know history.

Florida is finally getting back on track and these guys just can't stand it. I won't call this the death of their failed ideology in Florida because, as Dracula proves, you can't keep something that really sucks in the grave.

Look for Florida to take a dramatic upturn as productive people begin to flock there.

Saw some commentary last night to the effect that the census indicates this is already happening, due to state income tax laws, with states that lay the heaviest burden (NY, CA, etc.) losing at the top end and states with none (FL, TX, and TN) gaining the wealthy refugees.

The idea that you have to be in NYC or coastal California to be a big player gets more and more dated with every new webpage and e-commerce transaction, there are a few industries where it will always be true but that herd gets thinner every year.

As you all know, I hate NY and have been loud about it.  My husband and I have some bitter fights about it, because his roots are here.  On election night, seeing only one of my candidates (state senator) win the battle, he got a little panicky, knowing I would start chomping at the bit again.  He suggested Florida, and I said "You got it."

I was born here (NY).  So was my wife.  Hell, a little digging around by my FIL found out that his line goes back (8 or 9 generations back) to the immediately older-sister of Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer, who commanded the Patriot forces at the Battle of Oriskany in 1777 (and who died 11 days after the battle from wounds sustained in the battle).  We may be stupid for doing this, but we're staying . . . and fighting.  Someone's got to do it.

The only problem with that though is this, those people fleeing States like NY CA etc, the States that have driven people out? those same people still take their voting habits with them without giving thought to the fact that Democrats have driven those people out, they still vote for them. You see that happening in States like North Carolina and Florida, you can't say those States are solidly red anymore.

You just have to hope that those fleeing the Blue States are mostly conservatives.

Yep, though I try to look on the bright side and think of it as us getting the best of the lot.  Of course even Red states have home-grown citadels of Lib stupidity, like Austin TX, and Chapel Hill NC.
