Soooo....I'm thinking about going...to...church!!!
Edited on Mon Mar-31-08 11:30 PM by bicentennial_baby

I'm a lifelong agnostic, but...lately with all of the turmoil in my life, I'm feeling a pull to get on a different level. I'm seriously considering going to our local UUC a couple Sundays from now. I've been reading their sermons online, and I think it could help me. I'm not about to get on the gawd train, or anything like that, but I think I could use some spiritual energy.

What say y'all? Be gentle!

Hows that gonna work? :whatever: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=7619051&mesg_id=7619051

Okay, I went to that bonfire.

It seems the bi primitive is having some heavy personal issues, and so it's natural to seek answers.

I am however intrigued by this primitive notion that religion without God can do something for one.

What is it about the primitives, who find it so difficult to acknowledge God?

\I think it is an issue of pride, frank. This idea that one of them might have to say they were *gasp* wrong. It's difficult for anyone, but liberals seem particularly loath to admit when they've made an error in thinking or judgment.

Of course, pride was the first sin, man thinking he was God, and that's in just about all religious creeds, not just Christianity.

Stupid primitives, thinking themselves God.

UUC?  :thatsright: A DUmmie will fit right in.

Quote
Unitarian Universalism (UUism) is a theologically liberal religion characterized by its support of a "free and responsible search for truth and meaning." Unitarian Universalists do not share a creed; rather they are unified by their shared search for spiritual growth. Unitarian Universalists draw on many different sources and have a wide range of beliefs and practices.

Unitarian Universalist congregations and fellowships tend to retain some Christian traditions such as Sunday worship that includes a sermon and singing of hymns, but do not necessarily identify themselves as Christians.

Both Unitarianism and Universalism trace their roots to Christian Protestantism. Many UUs appreciate and value aspects of Islamic, Christian and Jewish spirituality, but the extent to which the elements of any particular faith tradition are incorporated into one's personal spiritual practices is a matter of personal choice in keeping with Unitarian Universalism's creedless, non-dogmatic approach to spirituality and faith development. Even before the Unitarian and Universalist movements combined their efforts at the continental level, the theological significance of Unitarianism and Universalism expanded beyond the traditional understanding of these terms.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

What is it about the primitives, who find it so difficult to acknowledge God?

I've thought about that many times, too, specifically as related to the Bible, and here's what I've concluded.

If the Bible were just a history book, it would be readily accepted by the overwhelming majority of people as a well written and documented preservation of historical events.  But it does more than that, it requires you to believe in a Creator.  Once you have that knowledge, you have no choice but to change your way of looking at the world.  And once you do that, it furthers requires you to change your life.  Most people don't want to change their life, they want to do what they want to do.  So, best to not acknowledge it at all and save yourself the hassle.

I don't know, but a couple of things, maybe: The Bible gives one a moral compass and DUmmies spend their lives trying to remain rebellious teenagers. How can one do whatever one wants if there are actually rules? Which brings me to my second thought: Because they remain petulant children, they have a need to mock and run from that which they don't understand. Certainly they try to convince themselves it's because they're smarter, more informed, etc. But, if that were true they wouldn't embrace each new cause with Evangelical zeal.

When I was younger it was global cooling and that ominous hole in the ozone...stop using spray deodorant!!! (I think some of them have yet to realize deodorant also comes in a roll on). Save the rain forest or there won't be any oxygen to breath or natives we can wistfully admire. Evidently, it's okay for indigenous peoples to cut down trees to plant coffee beans but not to sell to lumber companies. Now we're in the midst of their global warming (oops...make that global climate change) hysteria. This time we all have to change our light bulbs. These ones are SO dangerous that if they break and you have small children or a pregnant woman in the house they MUST leave the room. It's even suggested to cut out that portion of the carpet, if possible. Hopefully, we don't have a planet full of klutzes because if we dropped our "new and improved" light bulbs we could really screw up the planet. Oh, well maybe Algore will have enough carbon credits for sale for us to fix it before we die from toxic fumes. Those who believe in nothing will fall for anything.

A belief in God, Frank, gets in the way of their moral relativism.  Unfortunately for them, virtually all religions set moral standards for how one lives ones lives, and that eventually leads to judgements as to what is right and wrong.......this is an anathema to the mainstream liberal ideology....one simply cannot pass judgement on the manner in which a liberal lives and interacts with society.  Only conservatives can do that.....

If you look at bibaby's history, she is probably afraid to go to a church with any relationship to God.
She moves in with a married couple.  Munches enough carpet and sucks enough dick to get the man to toss his wife to the curb.  She marries newly single man.  Ex wife spirals into drug use and depression.

That's messing with a lot of commandments.

Ah.....there is always that forgiveness thing......one can only hope she finds it......

Badcat has a point though in that their concept of Christianity(and probably many other religions) is very skewed. Bibaby probably does not know the forgiving Christianity...she's too invested in the legalistic kind as an affront to how she lives to see it.....

....yet...

She doesn't want to face the fact that like everyone else she lives a sinful existence and to repent would be to acknowledge her past behavior was unacceptable in the eyes of God. Instead she seeks out a "church" where she is not required to take a seriously hard look at herself and can go on pretending that the world revolves around her and she does nothing to be ashamed of.

Exactly. To be a Christian is to recognize your flaws (not the entire thing, mind you). The problem with the DUmmies is that they think they're flawless.
