Dug out an old Family Photo
« on: November 11, 2010, 09:13:41 PM »
The lady on the left is my grandmother circa 1924

On the right is my dad just before being sent off. I didn't know anything about his military past, but maybe someone  can enlighten me. Can anyone recognize the medal on his hat?

That cover insignia is NOT a US insignia, maybe a Canuk??

It's a regimental cap badge of some sort. Can't really make out the pattern except, I believe, there is a maple leaf on the top.

Try making a post at the Great War Forum. There's a section called "Uniforms, Arms, Insignia, Equipment & Medals". Maybe they can help. They are very knowledgeable.

That is a P36 Greatcoat, I beleive. Officer's uniform, commonwealth. Not sure about the Cap Device, and it would be the unit Cap Badge. Can't make out rank pips, but the shirt and tie, not to mention the swagger stick makes him obviously an officer.

It's hard to make out, but the closest guess I would make would be the regimental badge for the Royal Canadian Artillery Regiment.

Okay, this is from someone who chooses to remain anonymous, but trust me, this person knows what he's talking about.

Quote
It appears to be a Royal Artillery cap badge for Imperial forces, I am not familiar with the distinctions of the uniforms that would pin down the time frame more precisely than to note the insignia was in use through the Second World War.

English and Commonwealth ground forces did not wear a single national badge on their caps, but for infantry and cavalry regiments wore a regimental badge; the Royal Artillery all wore a branch badge.

English and Commonwealth ground forces did not wear a single national badge on their caps.  Infantry and cavalry regiments wore their various regimental badges; the Royal Artillery and other support organizations like the Royal Engineers all wore the same branch badge regardless of unit.

I think Mike nailed it. Not a maple leaf up top, but a crown.

Just love the photo! Look at those shoes! It must have taken her a while to lace those up!? She must (those days all lady's did) have a corset on also.

Cave girl those shoes could be laced faster then putting on a corset.

Going through my g-grand mothers stuff as a kid while she still lived, she showed me a devise that was like a crochet hook and how it was used to fasten the laces.  In the box of goodies she also had 1/4 inchX 6 inches long whale bone " stays" to give the corset its holding power.

The Lady was young, the Bobbed hair and hat shows the transition woman went through from the huge hats of the 1900 to the Flapper days.  She was still away from short skirts but she was getting there.  That fur thing she has around her neck and one shoulder reminds me of the fox fur wraps with head and paws intact--

Beautiful young woman, proud but not haughty, the books in her lap make me wonder if she was a teacher or librarian, perhaps a writer.

For some reason looking at her, I can almost tell that she had a sence of humor and was trying to hard to look serious when the picture was taken.

Thank you so much. My dad mentioned he was a Lieutenant. I know absolutely nothing aside from stories he told me.

He said that he once went up on the roof during a black-out and decided to shoot the nazis with his gun after a night at the pub.

Well, vesta, she was an amazing woman. Very noble, from a noble family. My family has some interesting  ancestors, and seeing that you mentioned similar origins you might find this interesting. One notable is Abraham Martin, owner of the Plains of Abraham. I exist thanks to him.

Here she is in her later years, with my parents. At Old Orchard Beach. (My mom was hot!) :-)

Here is one of my Great-Grandfather.  If I'm not mistaken, it was taken right before he left to fight in Europe during World War I
