A Word About Veterans Day
« on: November 11, 2010, 01:00:49 PM »
It's good to have the recognition and support of the American people. It is certainly better than have the opposite.

But there is something that needs to be pointed out.

Veterans Day wouldn't mean what it does if the American people weren't the people they are.

The elements, missed sleep, missed meals, training injuries, long hours, fatigue, exhaustion, fear, grief and all that goes into being a member of the military are worth enduring because the people of America are worth serving.

Some nations are feckless. Others are malevolent.

But the American people will move Heaven and Earth to bring disaster relief half-way around the world without asking anything in return. They will rally to their own neighbors.

The American people are good people and they should be protected and their freedom preserved because it is a freedom they use for acts of charity and justice.

Maybe that sounds too idealistic or syrupy.

meh

But Veterans Day only matters because the American people make military service mean something.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

The military is the defender of the defenders, or simply and American Ideal that stands apart from the rest?
