All schools in Broward County, Florida, are under a lockdown Wednesday because of what a county spokeswoman described as "credible threat."

Pembroke Pines Deputy City Attorney Julie Klahr told CNN the full-scale lockdown was requested by police as a precautionary measure and extends as well to the school system's administrative offices.  The county has 231 traditional schools and centers, 69 charter schools and one virtual school, according to a Broward County school website.  According to the Pembroke Pines Police Department, a "possible threat" was received at 8:40 a.m. "in reference to the schools within the city of Pembroke Pines.

"Although this possible threat has not been confirmed, as a precaution the Broward County Schools and Pembroke Pines Charter Schools are on lockdown. An e-mail was also sent stating that 'something big was going to happen' around government buildings in Broward County. The Broward Sheriff's Office, Broward Schools and other Broward County agencies have been notified," the police statement added.

Pembroke Pines is about 20 miles northwest of Miami.

As many as 300 schools in South Florida have been placed on lockdown today after a woman called a radio station to warn that her husband was allegedly preparing to open fire at an area school.

Capt. Dan Rakofsky of Pembroke Pines Police Department said today that an e-mail threat deemed to be "credible" was also received prompting the security measures.

"Inititally we received information on a threat from a local radio station indicating a woman had called in to say her husband was going to show up at a school in Pembroke Pines and start shooting," said Rakofsky.
