What under-rated movies would you recommend to your friends?
« on: November 05, 2010, 09:05:45 PM »
I was poking through my pirated software and stolen movies to find something interesting to watch over the weekend, and I realized I have a lot of cliche'd, under-appreciated movies from the 80's and 90's available.  "My Cousin Vinny" is an instant classic.  "Gung Ho", while being the beginning of Michael Keaton's brief career, is still one of his best movies.

The hype... hype can kill a movie faster than anything.  'Avatar'?  **** it.  Ain't seen it, not going to.  James Cameron can spend a billion dollars on advertising and I still won't watch some stupid movie about blue cats.  Careers have been made and broken on advertising.  Has anyone seen Vin Diesel lately?  I didn't think so.  So, what long-forgotten, laughed-at movie would you recommend?

Me?  I have to go with the original 'True Blood'.  Rambo.  Disparaged, parodied, and worn out of it's welcome in it's time, but the original still stands as a classic.

Ok, Avatar is worth seeing. It isn't ALL THAT, but it is worth watching.

I guess The Godfather movies (minus part 3, but you should watch it just to say you've seen them all).

Of course I don't think they are overrated, but many do.

The first two were okay... the third was unwatchable.  I suppose those are considered classics and don't really apply here.

My Cousin Vinny and Gung Ho good.. How about the Untouchables with Sean Connery, not a classic but good.

Well, I'm off to watch Rambo #4.  It's an excellent movie even if it was ignored while it was out in theaters.

Two underrated movies I can think of, both fall into the "stupidly funny" category.

Excalibur. A great movie.

If you cab find it, The Godfather Saga is the version to watch. GF l and ll are splice together and shown in chronological order. It make much more sense. No jumping back and forth.

I would say Excalibur.  I avoided it for years do to negative reviews but it is really a great, operetic saga, both visually and aurally lush.  It is one of the few American movies I have seen that manages to capture that dream-time effect that Italian giallo directors have mastered for decades.

I suppose...

Jackass the Movie (just the 1st one)
Meet Joe Black
Threads - a 1984 BBC docudrama depicting the UK after a nuclear war. Surprisingly non-political, but extremely well-researched and terrifying for it's time.
Last Night - 1998 indy Canadian movie about the last night on earth. Very understated and really well acted and directed.

Early:  The Fountainhead, Modern Times, All Quiet on the Western Front.

Recent-ish:  Once Upon A Time in the West, Schultze Gets The Blues.

I have gotten several people hooked on "The Black Adder" BBC series.

+1 for The World's Fastest Indian, as well.  I really enjoyed it.

Jackass the Movie
Haven't seen any of them.

'Meet Joe Black' was good, but I probably wouldn't want to watch it more than once or twice.

I actually like most of Vin Diesel's movies  :-)

Wimbledon is pretty good chick flick that most people don't seem to have heard of.  The original Italian Job is really excellent!

True, they are classics, and the 3rd was pretty unwatchable.

Ok, then how about Closer. It won awards, and I really loved it, but I told my friend to watch it, and she hated it.

Natalie Portman was outstanding in that movie! And Clive Owen not bad eye candy.Very good movie. So was Garden State.

I agree that Portman was great. And she is so pretty. I remember having some questions about the movie when it was over, and I always like when a movie leaves me wondering. I mean, I hate it kinda, but it is intriguing.

And yes, Clive Owen only helped the movie.

Most underrated movies IMO?

Traffic.  Momento.  Super Troopers.  Better off Dead.  Leaving Las Vegas.  Falling Down.

Discuss.

Falling Down was pretty good, IMO....... I could really relate to the character that Michael Douglas portrayed in that movie. There have been times that I was TEMPTED to do similar, but it goes against my better judgment.

Since we're talking BBC (Mrs E is fervently addicted to it), Little Britain is chock-full of classic British humor, gut-busting in its cleverness.

I always thought that Pacino in Scarface was incredibly good. How he was able to gradually lose his Cuban "accent" through a megafilm (I think it ran about 3 hours) while shooting out of sequence is a testament to his skills as an actor.

The end of the film is brutal. Brian de Palma brings violence right to your face.
