34 warships sent from US for Obama visit
« on: November 04, 2010, 09:47:15 AM »
Quote
New Delhi:  The White House will, of course, stay in Washington but the heart of the famous building will move to India when President Barack Obama lands in Mumbai on Saturday.

Communications set-up, nuclear button, a fleet of limousines and majority of the White House staff will be in India accompanying the President on this three-day visit that will cover Mumbai and Delhi.

He will also be protected by a fleet of 34 warships, including an aircraft carrier, which will patrol the sea lanes off the Mumbai coast during his two-day stay there beginning Saturday. The measure has been taken as Mumbai attack in 2008 took place from the sea.

You know, this is humiliating, that we have to do this, sending a whole flotilla.

One of my heroes has always been Lord Palmerston, who during the 1850s could cow the entire nation of Greece by just sending out something little larger than a row-boat.

My, how we have fallen.

I wonder if this fleet of ships is part of the $200M/day costs of the trip?

If the flotilla is used to make sure he stays over there and wage war against India if they try to send him back...I'm OK with that.

Sorry, to/for India, they're decent chaps and all but the US needs a little "me time".

Apparently, the people of India know of this teleconferencing thing as well.  And shame on him for messing up their party.

The really interesting thing about this whole fiasco is that despite all the naval redeployment, huge cost, inconvenience to the locals, and massive entourage, the purpose for the trip is really quite vague.  I can't find much concrete on it that boils down to more than a sightseeing trip through Asia, with no particular reason for the three days in India at all other than to reassure them we  aren't trying to poop on their heads while trying to be nice to China and Pakistan.

I think Hallmark sells cards for that kind of thing that run a lot less than a half-billion dollars.  Of course we know from past Obama diplomatic triumphs (cough) that formal gifts to heads of state won't run up the bill very much.

A tunnel you say? That would explain Hillary's sudden interest in bricklaying.

First off this is not only an extreme wast of resources but a slap in the face to the Indian Military and security forces.

Secondly...as I said in the SB...the GOP...if they were smart...would use this as proof positive that despite what the President tells the rest of us...even HE is terrified of the possibility of a Muslim terrorist attack.

The US is out stepping the limits of tolerances of Indian Hospitality and confidence in our armed forces competence.

I bet they're wishing they'd invited 'President' Clinton.

Quote
...The Secretary of State joined New Zealand Prime Minister John Phillip Key and New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray Stuart McCully for remarks Thursday at Wellington's Parliament Theatrette, and the Prime Minister made a little slip up.

"And we, in a purely bilateral basis, have concerns about the fact that Australia has an FTA," began Key. "They’re a very important part of our market in New Zealand, so we see Trans Pacific Partnership as a very important item to be completed if at all possible. So, President Clinton..."

Actually they are, from time to time they bite people who then have to have rabies shots. And no one would want to see Obama bitten by a rabid monkey surely?  ;)

It isn't the monkeys themselves so much. It's just that the little bastards tend to throw shoes at the guy up on the podium.  :P
