If Tea Partiers are such deluded fools, why are they doing so well?

First, Leftie commentators ignored the Tea Party: throughout the summer of 2009, its rallies were barely covered except by Fox. Then, as it grew, they sneered at it: what a lamentable gaggle of rednecks, birthers, truthers, stump-toothed Appalachian mountain men and assorted survivalists. When these laughable Frondistes began to win primaries, pundits assured each other that they had made Republican Party unelectable. Now, with a week to go before polling day, and the GOP comfortably ahead in the polls, columnists have had to come up with a new line. Predictably, they have hit on the argument that Tea Partiers are a bunch of thickos, dupes being manipulated by powerful Right-wing corporations.

There is a classic of the genre in today’s Guardian. George Monbiot describes the Tea Party as “one of the biggest exercises in false consciousness the world has seen”, and goes on to explain that the poor, deluded saps who turn up to its meetings are puppets on the strings of two wealthy industrialists, Charles and David Koch.

A telling phrase, that, “false consciousness”. It was coined by Friedrich Engels, and became a mainstay of Marxist theory. Marx argued that, because proletarians didn’t always understand their true interests, democracy was open to abuse. Reactionary and bourgeois elements could make the workers think that they wanted one thing, when what they really needed was something else. It was the doctrine of false consciousness which Lenin and, later, Stalin, used to justify their tyranny

That's all the DUmpmonkiez have left.  I read a thread the other day, (wasn't entertaining enough to bring over), which posed the question, why the TP was gaining ground.  The responses looked exactly like they had turned to "insane" in the Thesaurus, and were passing it around.  That's the explanation they gave for blacks being at the Glenn Beck rally.  Are they really convincing themselves? 

As for the commenters over there, AmericanProgressive can be safely scrolled through without missing anything.  Great commentary otherwise, with TPers intelligent, sane, and non-frothing, and the few DUmmies, well, you know.

i'm not s ure why you think they are winning. if you combine the two campaigns, which will happen, rubio will loose, 48-41, or something like that. fiornio is loosing to boxer. whitman to brown. ak is a tough call, but miller has had a bad week. mcadams may pull it off.

An artful description as any I have read....
As a TEA Partier myself, I can tell you with complete frankness and honesty that I am certainly NOT the bought dog of any special interest beyond my own self-interests... Those are: God, Family and country, in that order....  Most of my friends in the group have never been politically active because they were too busy actually working and making their successful lives possible. Now we face Obama and his cabal of Looser Liberals bent on encumbering those of us who make their lives possible in even more governmental muck and mire... We TEA Party folks know there are 3 kinds of people: the looters, the moochers and the producers. The looter class (Obama and Co.) are placating the moochers. They are also, via horrifically bad policies creating more moochers and giving them more stuff ... The problem is, the producers, who see all this happening and who are by strength of character and just plain stubbornness are resisting the destruction of their, have risen up. They have had their belly full and are fighting back and they number in the MILLIONS... The TEA Party folks are almost all Producers... They want to continue to produce and to provide for themselves. They don't want what the looters are selling... It's that simple.
