Background check?
« on: October 27, 2010, 02:25:18 PM »
This is a strange one.

I have a family member that is planning to apply for a job. The job does background checks. For some reason he wants to have a background check done himself BEFORE he applies for the job. I don't know why. An attempt was made to explain to me why and I ended up more confused than when I started. Even though it doesn't make any sense to me, since I'm the family member that knows how to turn on a computer he's asked me how he would go about doing a background check on himself. I don't have a clue.

So my question to you CCers is how does one do a background check on yourself?

If everyone is telling you you deserve something, vote for the one who is promising you the least. Be suspicious of the man or woman who tell you deserve everything. Because you don’t.” ---Mike Rowe

What all do they check when they do one? Police records? Arrests?

I know how to research people in the courthouse records, but that is about it. I mean, he would know if he has any arrest record. They may check the criminal court records. Some of those are public.

I have no idea what all is checked. He was arrested when he was a teenager (probably 30 or so years ago) for DUI or possession or something. Whatever it was my wife said that he was just fined. If I'm understanding correctly one concern that he has is that several years ago yet another family member used his name to obtain several credit cards then defaulted.

I know there are places on the web the claim to do background checks. I just don't know how accurate or reliable they are.

Thanks. That looks like it might cost more than he wants to spend.

I still haven't figured out exactly what the big deal is. My thought is if he wants to apply for the job just apply for it. As for the credit card situation it was apparently years ago and apparently he was able to prove back then that he never applied for, used or authorized use of the credit cards.

Most employers offer the opportunity to discuss any "dings" on background checks too.

Sounds like he thinks he may have a skeleton in the closet, i.e. something he'd rather not put on the app or talk about in an interview, and he wants to make sure he doesn't get caught lying about it.

That's kind of my thoughts too, but I don't know what it could be. Of course it might not matter. He was supposed to call tonight and thus far I haven't heard anything from him.
