Our new gate codes
« on: October 24, 2010, 02:29:46 PM »
We decided to renew our lease at our current apartment instead of dealing with moving.  Our property installed new key pads at our gates, the scanner for the cards ended up breaking, which resulted in the gates not working properly.

Every unit has their own code.  That's 624 different codes for the property.  The code is your building number and unit.  I thought the ladies were joking about having that many codes.  When we were coming home from Sam's Club, I put a different building/unit number in the pad at the gate opened.

Don't you think that's kind of odd?  Do you think the computer system shows every time a code was used?  It just seems so stupid to have 624 different codes.  You can get in by just putting in a short series of codes if you don't want to call your friend on the gate phone.  Or if you don't want to wait for another car to enter.

Is it really any of their business when I come home every day if the key pad codes do tracking?

Of course it is none of their business.

It isn't any of their business when you come and go.  That being said, 624 available codes?  Really?  So someone could just walk up and start putting in 4 digit numbers and more likely than not open the gate.  That's stupid.  You need to tell the management that it needs fixed or it needs to go away, because that situation is worse than having no gate at all.

Will they let you pick your own code?  The last storage unit I rented had that.  Having a 1 in 9000 chance of picking any 4-digit code is safer than a 1 in 624 chance, especially if it's something easy to figure out.

The apartment complex down the street has a coded gate and a short driveway.  It backs up onto the road during rush-hour.

Nope.  They assign the code to us.  Let's say you're in building 99 and your unit number is 301, then your gate code will be 9931.  Totally easy to get right in here.  The gated community isn't really a big deal to me.  But if you're going to have a gate, why not just stick with ONE code?  That's how it's been ever since we lived here, until they had this new company fix the keypad.

Apparently all you need to get in, is to know which unit you want to burglarize.

Apartment gates are a joke!!! The last time we lived in one, it was much the same scenario. I would get SO frustrated getting stuck behind someone who didn't know their code. Part of the problem was the visitors and residents had to use the same keypad so if you didn't live there, you just pulled up to the keypad and dialed the resident's unit and they buzzed you in by pressing a number on their phone. BIG PAIN for the residents if you had some moron in front of you trying to track down a friend who hasn't home. And, to top it off, people were tailgating behind others and rushing through the gates to get in creating havoc not to mention breaking several sets of gate arms. I can't count how many times those got replaced.

The best system I ever saw was at an apt. complex in Texas. Residents got gate passes that looked like a toll tag. You put it in your windshield and as you drove up to the gate, it would automatically open for you. The entrance was long enough to where you only had to slow down a little before it opened making the whole process less of a pain. And, they had clearly marked off a "Guest" area and you had to drive down a separate driveway/entrance if you were a guest. It kept them out of the way of residents.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Or deliver Pizza, if the lame-o's that ordered it don't buzz you in.

That being said, it is just as easy to run the gate as someone else goes in.  No need to know a stinking code.

The one at my parent's place has a menu with resident's names on it (last name, first initial).  Someone has to buzz you in to open the gate, but it does stay open long enough to get two or three cars through.

We have that at our main gate.  Although we are not part of that system since we do not have a house phone.  Our gates have those metal teeth at the front, but people slam their cars into them anyway.  That's typically what causes our gates to be out of order for about a month.

Delivery people can never find our property.  We are a hidden complex, which is a good thing, but kind of annoying if you want to be lazy and have food delivered.

My uncle's apartment complex has something similar. It scans cards only. You can't punch in a code, so when I go over there, it sucks because I don't have a card. I just wait for someone to go through the gate.

There's a mini storage complex here in town that lets you choose your own 4 digit code for tracking who's in and out at what times. Any guesses as to the 3 easiest?

Verified numbers.

1234
the 4 huge numbers of the address on the front of the office.  :whatever:

The subdivision we moved out of last month was gated. Same code for everyone.

But all you had to do was pull up to the gate far enough for the light behind the gate to turn on and the gate would automatically open....and stay open for at least a couple of minutes, long enough for several cars to keep passing through.  ::)

There really was not much point to it.
