Minefield (New Browser for Firefox)
« on: July 18, 2010, 12:42:07 AM »
If you like Firefox, try Minefield. It's blazing compared to the 32 bit version. Unfortunately, so much Flash is used and it's not available in 64 yet, for Windows anyway.

It appears that "Minefield" is just a precursor to the next Firefox release.........

Cool.

I forgot where I saw it (techcrunch, maybe) but someone did a speed comparison for a handful of browsers recently.  Opera and Chrome came out on top.

Minefield is still beta, so they may not have done this one.

Minefield is Firefox 4.0. If they compared Firefox 3.6 or below, then it needs to be recompared. I'm downloading Chrome on another PC for testing. We'll see.

Well, minefield took over Firefox on one PC and not on another. Flash is not available for Minefield 64 bit. (There's a Beta, but it didn't work)  The Google chrome speedtest was pathetic, at best:

I can't do one for Minefield because it requires a working Flash. It does seem to load a little more quickly than Chrome.

Here's the FF 3.6.11 speedtest:

Chrome

Old Firefox version.

IE 8

I seldom use IE 8, because it seems to slow down with multiple tabs open.

Who uses IE8 anyways ?? I'm going to wait until tomorrow and run the tests again. Something's not quite right with my bandwidth. (I only pay for 5 Mb/sec) I was continually getting  5.4 Mb/sec but I have a leecher (permitted)  and Inga is using one of the other PCs.

I can't remember the last time I used IE 8, but I just threw it in for caparison.  My wife is on her laptop watching some videos, so it might slow things down.

I'm having issues with the current version of Firefox (3.6) dragging ass, freezing, and hogging resources.  I'm going to try Safari for a while since I already have it installed.

I'm really liking the Top Sites feature on Safari... pick 12 sites and set up a portal to them as your home page.
