500-600 is nothing. I just dropped about 1200 on my dog's ear infection that blew up into a hematoma in her ear. To add insult to injury, the damn ear doesn't even stand up anymore. Do you know how dumb a German Shepherd looks with one ear flopped down?

Ooh, my dog had such bad ear infections. The doc warned me about the hematoma. It never happened though. Have you tried changing his diet at all? That did seem to help my dog. His paws and his ears stayed infected. We quit feeding him chicken, beef, and lamb, corn. We started him on veal and sweet potato. He also can have rabbit. It has helped. We haven't been to the doc for his paws or ears in quite a while. Of course it is an expensive diet.

I just wanted to add that I would pay whatever I could afford, and probably what I couldn't, to keep my pets alive if they wouldn't be suffering and could live a happy pet life. I would not go online though and ask for money. I have shelled out way more than I am happy to admit on my pets and will surely do so again since I plan to always have pets. But, I will not have a pet if I can't afford it. Just the regular care for a pet is high. We never know what we are getting when we get our pets. I had one with bad allergies. I had one with a heart and lung condition. Both cost me a whole lot. I scrounged up my own money to pay for it though. I have no problem with helping others and their pets, but I couldn't ask a bunch of strangers for help knowing many of them are struggling just to keep a roof and food. That's me. I don't say just put it down though. If the animal can live a happy life after treatment, then I just can't say that. I'd go about helping my animal in another way. My vet would work with me on the payments. Good vets usually will (if they know you are good for it).

I think we are all in agreement on that.  I do.  I was fortunate when Angus needed help, I had the $$ to take care of it.  Now I need to get him to go out and earn some cash, so I can continue on my path to make my house a stellar masterpiece.   :-)  Back to scratch.  Again.  Oh well.

The cat is 15 ?  No ethical vet would prolong that poor kitties life beyond quality of life especially if it's a financial burden to the owner :(  For shame DU admin is even allowing such a thread.

I'm allergic to cats so I've always had dogs, but after losing my little 1 and then 6 months later losing my older dog, I'm hesitant to get another dog, hubby's saying we'll never put out that kind of money again for an animal has kind of stuck with me, what if the animal gets sick? I can't just say oh well and put them down, I'd have to do something, and I'm scared of incurring debt again because an animal might get sick.

If it were a dog, I may agree, but cats can live happy lives for a good bit longer. I've known of many cats to live to 23 (happy and not in pain). But asking DU for donations is something I'd certainly never do. Or ask anyone to do for that matter (ok, except my parents--maybe).

If  you think about getting a dog, you could check out the insurance costs, and it'd probably be economically feasible.  Pet healthcare is becoming more popular, AND apparently it covers alot of expenses.

We need to check on it soon for our puppy.  We had to have her treated for Parvo the first week, and it cost over $900.  That was just two weeks after paying over $800 to have our last dog diagnosed, and then put to sleep two weeks before.

Just like a DUmmie! Make the cat suffer, so it doesn't have to face reality! The cat is 15 years old for cripes sakes!

ETA:

I had to put one of my granddaughter's horses down last week! I coulda spent a coupla thou tryin' to make a lame horse sound again, but it has been my experience, even after ya spend all that money, they never get sound enough to ride and are in constant pain. This DUmmie gets no sympathy from me. I'm the terminator/mortician/grave digger around here. When this DUmmie has to put their own animal down, then perhaps we can talk!

Over the years I've put down some of my best friends from the animal kingdom! The worst one was my wolf hybrid that developed liver cancer. She was my "partner in crime' for 13 years! Another was an old mare that you could put a 2 year old on her back and just walk away! She was a helluva baby sitter! It ****in' sucks, but I would rather it was me, than some stranger they have no relationship with. That, to me, is just cruel!

The old lady and I have just such a plan for our Saint Bernard, Harley. Worth every penny, and it really saved our asses after he got into a late night fight with a coyote last summer.  :bow:

We use the PurinaCare Plus plan, primarily because Saint Bernards (and other giant breed dogs) are particularly susceptible to dysplasia and any number of other issues. In addition, I really like the accident coverage. Harley's a real sweetheart, but at 180 lbs, he isn't always able to get out of his own way, unless of course a coyote makes the mistake of coming into our yard at night.  :banghead:
