TPS teacher who watched Obama sign bill is laid off
« on: October 16, 2010, 07:16:52 AM »
Quote
As Toledo Public Schools teacher Amanda VanNess stood in the Oval Office and watched President Obama sign an education stimulus bill, she already knew she'd lost her teaching job back home to budget cuts and low seniority.

The $26 billion stimulus bill, designed to save 160,000 teacher and other government jobs across the nation, couldn't save her position at Pickett Elementary.

In fact, Ms. VanNess has been laid off twice from TPS this year.

I can tell you that in MA no one is spending that money.   They are sitting on it until next year, because FY12 we will see the stimulus giveaways evaporate, and state budgets will be seriously in the red.

It's all smoke and mirrors.   Everyone who actually deals with school budgets (eliminate teaching staff from this equation as they just don't have the tiniest of clues as to how a school budget is funded and allocated -- they think they do, but absolutely do not) understands the fall from the cliff we are careening out of control towards.

You think it's been ugly?   you ain't seen nada nothing yet.

I think that it's the same here. At the VFW, our Bingo is down considerably from a year ago and bar revenues are not. It's dragging us in the hole. I've spent some money this year, mostly on a badly needed computer (All of mine were 10 years old or so), which I assembled myself just to save some money. I've also bought some clothes. Other than that, everything is spent on necessities.

I myself have stopped taking two Rx's. I sure notice the difference in the pain. I have a little arthritis. The price of the meds to much.. The next town has lost a dinner and a general store and the laundry mat. We have nothing in a way of a store. There sure are a lot of cabins for sale too.

Uh....not to put too fine a point on it, but some might say that putting clothes on your ass might be a necessity.    :-)  :fuelfire:   :rotf:

Thought I would read this and cheer.   Sadly, it is just as likely that this teacher with "low" seniority was excited about teaching.  She probably could have incited her students to want to learn.  Instead they will be saddled with the "seniority" teachers who don't care about anything but their paychecks and benefits.  Old and wicked will overcome young and driven every time.
