I got called a faggot at work today

I was walking to my cubicle and my coworkers were lining the hall. One coworker, I don't know who, called out faggot. Soon there were snickers and laughing and then I was tripped and my books and papers fell all over the hall. One of the bosses was out in the hall but apparently didn't see anything. So I just slinked off to my desk. Later in the cafeteria I went to sit at a table but my coworkers wouldn't let me. So I tried another table and it was no dice. They said they don't eat with faggots. So I ate at a table all by myself. Later I had to go to the bathroom real bad so I ran into the restroom and relieved myself. On the way out one of my coworkers barred the door and pushed me into a stall. He hit me a few times and then I finally got out. I told my boss but since he didn't see it, nothing could be done. I really need the job so I guess I will go in tomorrow but I sure don't want to.

Now of course none of the above really happened to me at work. But this really does happen to way too many of our middle schoolers and high schoolers today. We would find my tale absurd for an adult, but we somehow accept it for kids. What are we going to do to change this?

Lots of kudos for making a good point, but what good point was made by the OP? how many kids get bullied for a variety of reasons? I was bullied all throughout 6th grade because I was the new kid and I didn't know how to deal with it, 7th grade started and the bullying continued, about a month after I started 7th grade I had enough, 1 of the people bullying me threw a pencil at me in class and the point hit me, I got up from my desk, grabbed her hair, pulled her out of her desk and proceeded to beat her up, the Teacher came to break it up and I accidentally punched him in the face, I got called to the Principle's office and my Parents were called, and my Parents told the Nun that they had no problem with what I did because this was going on for over a year, I went back to class and never got bullied again, and for the 1st time I had friends in that class.

There've been some sad suicides lately but there have always been some kids who resort to this act for a variety of reasons, I think it's sad and exploitive how the gay community is jumping in on this issue for their own personal agenda.

It's not even an original point.  It was brought up by the attorney for the parents of the kid who committed suicide because of a bully.  It was on the national news.

Yup.  The attorney didn't give the whole "I was called a faggot" story but he did say "We wouldn't put up with this stuff at the workplace so why do we put up with it at school."

And as far as it goes.  Bullying has gone on as long as there has been people.  Yes, sometimes it gets out of hand but most of the time all one has to do is stand up for themselves, like you mentioned above, and it magically goes away.

We've all lived through it in some form or fashion.  It's part of what makes us who we are.  That's why Liberals are such weak kneed sissies!

Sounds kind of like my case in grammer school. Everybody but Butch could beat me up...sooooo...when ever I got my ass whipped at school, I went looking for Butch....poor Butch.

Had a problem in jr. high with a bully and his crowd every morning. The first day of 8 th grade and he was going to do me the same way as the year before....except this time I hugged him and bit down on his nose....you should have heard the hollaring and screaming....and him begging his buddies to pull me off... then saying don't pull him off... ....couldn't make up his mind which he wanted.

Yeah, the principal paddled my ass but it was woth it. Mitchell and his gang never messed with me again.

I had a guy once when I was in 9th grade, that was to say the least, 200 lbs past my measily 145. He bullied everybody! He finally got around to me and was goin' to make it his goal in life to kick my ass!

I went home and cut off dad's shovel, so I had the top end. I drilled a hole in the end so I could put a leather thong thru it, and rap it around my wrist. The thing fit real well up my coat sleeve.

The next day he confronted me at the bus stop. Ya should have seen his face right before I walloped him up side the head with that shovel handle!

Funny, he never bullied anyone else that I know of after that!

Dad kicked my as for sawin' off that shovel, but it was well worth it! None of the kids ever had a problem with that asshole after that.

That may be true. That does not make it ok. I am not just talking gay kids either. Kids can be so cruel. Whether they get it from their parents or peer pressure, whatever. I needs to be dealt with. The mean kids need to be dealt with, and not only from the ones getting bullied.

I worked at the YMCA for a long time being a camp counselor. I saw this one kid get routinely picked on. I never tolerated it, but I wasn't always around. One day this kid did get fed up and he beat that kid's ass. I watched for a second or two before I intervened. I knew I had to intervene, but I also knew the kid had finally had it. I had to punish them both. When I confronted the bully's dad, he acted like it was no big deal. Pissed me off. His kid made this kid miserable every chance he could. But his kid could do no wrong. I got loud with this kid after having enough of him. He pushed a girl down. I took this bully to my boss. I told her if something wasn't done, I was out. She hadn't realized how bad it was. We had a loooong talk. My boss, this bully kid, and me. The kid never bullied again. At least while I was there. As I stated in another thread, it takes a village, and it can't be tolerated. I saw what it does to a kid. I thought about that kid every day when I left work. I still think about that kid. And as a parent, I can't imagine the hurt a parent feels for their child going through this. Yeah, they need to stand up for themself, but that is easier said than done for a kid who is getting tormented every day. And it shouldn't have to come to beating a kid's ass. It should be dealt with way before it gets to that point. TEacher, parents, and other kids need be aware. Just because we all went through it doesn't make it ok. We didn't all have facebook and all these internet sites in those days either. Bullying has gone to a whole new level.

I don't like bullying either, I don't think most people do, my issue is people jumping on the anti-bullying bandwagon now, and instead of talking about doing something about all bullying they just seem to be bringing up some incidents involving gay kids when it's something that effects many kids.

 I know most people don't like bullying. There is nothing good about it, but I do think we have to realize that in today's world with facebook, and texting pics, etc., bullying has been taken to a new level. I don't want innocent kid teasing to become "oh no he's bullying again", but I do think we have to get with today's times with the bullying. Calling names, etc., is nothing like posting terrible things about someone on the web for all the kids to see or pictures that have been photoshopped, etc.

I totally agree.  My point was that it is in no way limited to homosexuals.  Bullying should be shut down, period.  Bullying anyone is wrong, and it is not more wrong when based on sexuality...or, for that matter, race, religion, or anything else.  It is just as hard on a straight kid who is the "right color" and "right weight" and "right whatever else" as it is on anyone else.  The best way to deal with one bully is for the other kid to do their level best to put the bully in the dirt.  If that doesn't work, then the authorities have to deal with it.  Someone who bullies is going to continue that pattern until they learn better...on their spouses and children, too.

What you do not understand is that once another kid at school or an adult at work starts the bullying, you need to nip it in the bud pronto. I always fought my own battles rather than being *****. In life, you have to take up for your self. If you don't, you will get shit on many times.

Exactly.  Most kids are bullied at some point, and it's just sick to count some bullying as different because the victim has some more obvious difference.  I raised 4 straight, white, non-minority, not fat, not ugly, totally normal kids...and am raising a 5th.  Nothing unnormal about any of them, and every one has been bullied.  The problem is that bullies are treated as though they have some reason to bully instead of being put down by everyone.  There is no reason, no excuse, zip.
