Trip to Brokeoff Mountain (pic heavy!)

Last month the wife and I went on a school field trip with my daughter's class. Because we have her in a Charter, we are required to put in a certain ammount of "parent time" each year.
Each year the 8th grade class goes on a hike up Brokeoff Mt, in Lassen Nat'l park. Because it's an entire day we wipe out our hours in one trip, so it works out well.
 The trail starts out at 6000+ feet and ends at Brokeoff which is 9200 ft in abut 3.2 miles. This is a 2600 ft elevation change that's fairly steep.

The trail is still pretty level at this point but starts getting steeper.

Well I hauled my fat old ass up the hill and got a great view, that's Lassen peak :

We had a great trip, and for me it was nice to know I can still hike up a trail that feels like it's going to kill me. :-)

Awesome pics!  My brother and SIL do the outings with my niece's school as well.  Last year they went to Big Bend.  I think that is great.

Reminds me of some of the hiking we'd done in the Wasatch....

I LOVE Big Bend.  2 motorcycle trips out there so far and a 3rd possibly on the way.

I thought I'd throw in a couple more. This is looking back down the trail from the top:




This a shot looking just to the right of Lassen Peak. You can see the road that goes through the park (hwy 89). In the lower left/center is Sulpher Works, and in the distance (center/top) is the area near Bumpass Hell.

I have friends that ranch in the north of CA, so I know in my head there are great areas, but, I have to confess to the ignorant expectation of  brown hazy skies and litter when ever I hear California.

Maybe you could keep posting great pictures like these and people like me will eventually "get it!"  :-)

Heh, the main problem with some of the perceptions about Ca. are:

1. Ca. is one long beach with S.F. at one end and L.A. at the other.

2. It's covered in Palm trees.

3. Movie stars are roaming all over the place.

4. Everyone says 'DUUUDE!" and is a surfer.

Everything is quite the opposite, as long as you don't live anywhere near the L.A. basin. L.A. is like it's own microcosm, that has NO basis in reality.
