A gay student murdered in a classroom...
Posted by cynatnite on Fri Mar-28-08 09:52 PM

OXNARD, Calif. - Larry King was a gay eighth-grader who used to come to school in makeup, high heels and earrings. And when the other boys made fun of him, he would boldly tease them right back by flirting with them.

That may have been what got him killed.

On Feb. 12, another student, Brandon McInerney, 14, shot him twice in the head at the back of the computer lab at their junior high school, police say.

The slaying of the 15-year-old boy has alarmed gay rights activists and led to demands that middle schools do more to educate youngsters about discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

snip:

The shooting has galvanized Oxnard, a city of nearly 200,000 people about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Several vigils for King have been held, including a march that drew about 1,000 people to this strawberry-growing section of Ventura County.

Like the killings of some other gay students — such as Matthew Shepard in Wyoming, and Brandon Teena, the Nebraska transsexual whose story was the subject of the movie "Boys Don't Cry" — King's death has drawn national attention and outraged many gays.

Comic Ellen DeGeneres, who is a lesbian, said on her talk show Feb. 28: "Larry was not a second-class citizen. I'm not a second-class citizen. It is OK if you are gay."

Students at E.O. Green Junior High said the other kids used to taunt King, call him names and throw wet paper towels at him in the boys' restroom, and he would bravely fire back by flirting with them and chasing them.

acceptable attire for middle school? Obviously no one should be murdered for it, but I would like to know what kind of parents and school district would allow that. Clearly, they must have known this kid would be abused for dressing like a girl.

Careful Noirceuil, that kinda talk will put that granite taste in your mouth quick-like.

You should just get used to being abused or killed based on your attire.

When you go to school, dressed like a freak, expect to be thrown under the bus for it  :whatever:

And, there have been limitations on what kids can wear to school for eons.

The other kid that murdered this kid is a shameful beast, no doubt about that.

The school and this kid's parents failed here too, because dressing like that is not only going to guarantee that the kid will get picked on, but it is also a major distraction from all the other kids there.

Suspected school shooter's childhood marred by violence

But friends can't believe Brandon McInerney did it

>>>snip

Childhood marred by violence

Brandon grew up in Silver Strand, a sun-bleached neighborhood isolated by harbors on each side where million-dollar homes sit next to ramshackle beach huts. It was here that Brandon fished from jetties, surfed and hung out at the neighborhood taco stand.

Danny Crave, 22, remembers watching Brandon's family move into a nearby beach house when Brandon was a baby. Most simply called Brandon "Bear," a nickname he picked up as a kid and never shook off.

It was where Brandon spent most of his childhood and where his parents had some of their most violent fights, according to divorce and other court records. Brandon was 6 when his parents separated, but problems between Kendra and William McInerney started before Brandon was born.

>>>snip

Teasing Larry

Weeks before the shooting, the teasing intensified when Larry came to school wearing high-heeled boots, makeup and earrings along with his school uniform of pants and a shirt. Larry told friends he was being teased by fellow students because he was gay. Still, he insisted on being himself.

"He said, I'm proud. I don't care if other people tease me,'" said eighth-grader Matthew Hernandez, 13.

>>>

Matthew said a student once threatened to take a photo of Larry on his cell phone and post it on his MySpace Web page with a derisive name for gays. Mostly it was verbal teasing, his friends said.

Larry didn't just take it. If kids didn't want to have contact with a gay person, Larry would chase after them, Matthew said.

>>>snip

About four months before he was killed, however, Larry moved to Casa Pacifica, a residential facility near Camarillo for abused, neglected and emotionally troubled children. His father, Greg King, declined to discuss why, as have authorities, who cite confidentiality laws.

The autopsy showed no signs of previous injury or child abuse, according to the medical examiner.

Larry lived in the 45-bed emergency shelter. Specialists assess and treat children before a judge decides whether to reunite them with their families or place them in foster or group homes. Casa bused Larry to E.O. Green for classes, as required by law.

It was then that Larry began to wear makeup and earrings, although more than a year ago he had begun attending meetings of a support group for gay, bisexual and transgender youth at the Ventura County Rainbow Alliance in Ventura.

You know, if Larry had been straight, the DUmp would be protesting the treatment of Brandon...who came from a failed home.

As much as I believe in freedom of association, freedom of movement, and so forth, there are still certain neighborhoods in certain cities I wouldn't venture into to visit friends, especially after dark. Would that mean I was compromising my beliefs in said freedoms, and in doing so, "not being me?" Maybe so, to a certain extent. If I were to go to them and get mugged or murdered, would it be my fault? No, it would be the murderer's fault. But that doesn't set aside the fact that I ignored reality and failed to take steps for my own well-being.

We don't live in a utopia. It's all well and good to say, "he did nothing wrong, the kids should be taught tolerance," but that ignores the reality that some battles shouldn't be picked unless you're prepared for consequences. High school is a hormone-driven, emotionally charged place. There's enough angst to keep Emos and bullies in business for millenia. There's plenty of time to make social statements of this sort when one reaches an age where the social strata is a tad more cerebral than that found in HS. The parents and the school should have put clamps on this kind of flamboyant behavior from the beginning. The bottom line is he would still be alive if they had accepted their adult responsibility for doing so rather than expecting teenagers to police themselves.

The refusal to accept this fact is one reason DUmmies are dangerous. They refuse to acknowledge history and human nature, and they don't give a damn how many people are martyred on the altar of political correctness while they vainly attempt to create their own heaven here on Earth.

What you said and more. I don't care for whatever it is they do but that is their business. Shooting someone over it goes way beyond reason. The shooter needs to be put into the express lane to the big house.

I know what you mean, so I am not using your words here personally:

We never hear about how the freaks should be tolerant of the normal people's sensibilities.  Why is it considered "tolerance" only if the normal people give in to the freaks?  How is it the 13 year old freak-kid wasn't being intolerant towards the expectations of others?

It is time to start asking these questions and reframe the debate.  Homos and other freaks need to be called on their intolerance towards society.

Maybe this hideous murder can be a wake up call.

Not to justify this, but going to school in drag is a recipe for abuse.
The killer needs a life term in the big house for this, but the gay kid seemed out to deliberately provoke reactions as well.

The dead kid also could have been killed for being an asshole. People do that...

The kid who shot him is being charged as an adult and looking at life.  This is absolutely appropriate in this case.  I still think the DUmp would take exactly the opposite stance if the murdered boy had been straight...then this murder would be society's fault or the fault of gun laws.
