poll: how are the primitives going to take it?
« on: October 10, 2010, 10:25:38 AM »
Okay now, we're getting into only about three weeks before the elections of 2010.

I wasn't around in October 1994, instead wandering around the godforsaken socialist paradises of the workers and peasants with free medical care for all, and as the downtrodden weren't much interested in American elections, it was never anything on the "news," and I have no idea what it was like here, back then.

In late March 1995, when I finally got the news--I was somewhere on the wind-blown steppes--that not only had Nebraska won the national championship in college football, but that the Republicans had taken Congress for the first time in my whole life, it was a good thing I was wearing brown pants.

So I don't know what to make of things as they are right now.

Are we peaking too soon, or is the momentum still growing?

Only God knows.

Anyway.

Win or lose, how does one speculate the primitives are going to take it?

Inevitably, of course the primitives are going to lose, the only question being "by how much?"  It's a hard-and-fast rule that the party in the White House loses seats in Congress (and gubernatorial chairs), the only exceptions in the whole history of this Republic being in 1934 and 2002.

And the current president, who's no Franklin Roosevelt or George Bush, isn't going to be the third exception.

The primitives are going to lose, but in case the Devil is listening, I'm sticking with the "official" Republican party prediction, a pick-up of one seat in the Senate, one seat in the House, and one seat in a state capitol somewhere.

How does one suppose the primitives are going to take it?

I think that it's pretty obvious how they're going to take it . . .

Couple that with them blaming their fellow 99% cult members for being upset with Dear leader for not making this the USSR within 2 years, and for the electorate "voting against their own best interests," and that will cover virtually all the bases.  I won't say all bases are covered because it's impossible to totally predict the insane.

I'd like to add a few bases...

Corollary to that will be so much frothing-at-the-mouth-hatred of tea party people/identifiers that it'll deserve separate mention. I'd expect a spike in posts exemplifying Palin Derangement Syndrome as well (which has pretty much eclipsed Bush Derangement Syndrome), since her endorsements have counted for much. Double that last if Angle eliminates Reid, as it appears is going to happen.

There'll be much simply calling the electorate stupid and Fox-brainwashed, also corollary to the bolded statement above. Oh, add triple-dipped shitcones of Fox News loathing.

We would see what the 'Large Hadron Collider' was expected to do:  Dummy heads imploding and collapsing into singularities under the immense pressure of all that negative intelligence.  Those singularities would be drawn to one another and combine into a large black hole of stupidity, which will utterly consume Skin's Island of Misfit ****-ups, and eventually (by December 21th, 2012) swallow the earth whole.

Ought to be one hell of a ride.

'Not well' doesn't even begin to cover it.

Let me add that after every election we've enjoyed together as a group, whether here or at CU, we have had some primitive wander over extending an olive branch of "OK you won, aren't there some things we can agree upon and work together to improve?" or "We won, no hard feelings, time to pull together and help us move forward the agenda the people favored."  Now that I mention it having happened, it's probably jinxed, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Okay now, I got a question which is off-topic, but not worth a new thread.

As I mentioned in my original post, I wasn't around in 1994, so have no idea what was going on then.

I come home for a few minutes this evening, and am finding no good news, no good news at all, for the Dems.

"DEMS IN RETREAT" seem to be all over.

"IT LOOKS TO BE A ROUT" most seem to be predicting.

It's three weeks yet before the elections, and I'm curious.

At what point in 1994 did most seem to sense the Republicans would gain control of both houses of Congress for the first time since 1952?

Was it an unexpected--but of course something more than "pleasant"--surprise, or did people sense it coming?

And if they sensed it coming, about when did that sense happen?

In spring 1994?  In summer 1994?  In autumn 1994?

Long before the elections, or only days or minutes before the elections?

I'm worried we might peak too soon, but having no "past" on which to measure, have no idea if we are or aren't.

(Naturally, I'm hoping the momentum keeps building.)

I wasn't able to find much, but I did come across this article, published in late September 1994.  It doesn't sound like any Republican landslide was expected.
Quote
A net of 40 seats would have to swing from Democrats to Republicans for them to win control of the House in the November election. The morning line is that Republicans may well pick up 25 to 30 seats but are not likely to reach 40.

But Republican leaders today expressed confidence that they would beat the conventional odds. Representative L. William Paxon of upstate New York, the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said he had reviewed all the opinion polls and believed that if the election were held today, Republicans would win the House.

One reason for the event today was to dispel the notion that Republicans are obstructionists who have no ideas of their own. Republican candidates for the Senate put out a similar platform last week.

"It's important that we stand for something," said Grant Lally, who is running against Representative Gary L. Ackerman in a district that includes parts of Long Island and Queens.

A matter that worries some Republicans is that they have given Democrats a target to shoot at for the rest of the campaign. Before this, when the Republican manifesto was limited to opposing President Clinton, Democratic candidates found it hard to take the offensive. Now, Democrats can tote up the Republican proposals and argue that they have promised to favor the rich at the expense of the less fortunate and would break the national economy.
