Jesus certainly understood--prophesied--that wars were going to continue:
Mark 13:7-8
When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.
And understood the need for armed forces:
Matthew 8:5-10
When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him 6and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress." And he said to him, "I will come and cure him." The centurion answered, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and the slave does it." When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, "Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith.

I don't see the DUmmies making it clear what office he would be running in a primary FOR. Although the idea of Jesus seeking political office is flatly ludicrous--"Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence" (John 18:36)--he probably would win a Republican legislator's seat nomination handily. Obviously Jesus Christ would not be suited to command in war, and He'd probably have been the first to say that if ever asked. In fact he pretty much was asked that in the quote from John above.
