Glow Bull Warming Alert!! (Never Mind)
« on: October 06, 2010, 07:18:36 AM »
Coldest winter in 1,000 years on its way

Published 04 October, 2010, 22:20

After the record heat wave this summer, Russia's weather seems to have acquired a taste for the extreme.

Forecasters say this winter could be the coldest Europe has seen in the last 1,000 years.

The change is reportedly connected with the speed of the Gulf Stream, which has shrunk in half in just the last couple of years. Polish scientists say that it means the stream will not be able to compensate for the cold from the Arctic winds. According to them, when the stream is completely stopped, a new Ice Age will begin in Europe.

More at Link

and then there's this:

Winter-time temperatures will be below average for much of the northern United States, Pacific northwest, a good chunk of the western United States as well as the Great Lakes states and the Northeast. Brutally cold temperatures, perhaps the coldest in the United States will be felt over portions of the Pacific Northwest, extreme northern plains including Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota as well as portions of Southern Canada. Severe arctic outbreaks will be quite likely first originating across Alaska, Siberian and western Canada then sliding southeastward first encompassing the Pacific Northwest, portions of the western United States then movineast east northeast across the northern plains, Great Lakes states, and a very small portion of the northeast. In fact, temperature could be so severe they could be smashing records in the far north in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota. In fact, even the Pacific Northwest could go through a few severe arctic outbreaks, nothing like they have seen for many years, even in 2008. A far cry of where they have been last winter where they experienced a relatively mild winter. On the other side of the spectrum, much above average temps and above average temperatures will be felt across the southeastern United States and portions of the Mid Atlantic due to the strong ridge that will be in place throughout portions of the winter. But don't despair! I am expecting at least one major arctic outbreak that couldbe so strong it could penetrate the southeast and middle Atlantic states and some bitter temperatures couldbe felt down in those regions, but by far the coldest regions should remain to the north of the southeast and to the northwest in the middle Atlantic states. If you live anywhere i just mentioned in the below average temps, get those new parka's because it's gonna be a brutal winter!

I'm right along the Average-Above Average line, thank God!  If they're right, of course.

I'm  a good ways south of the above average line....makes me happy.

I'm right above the "Below Average" line. We've already had a cooler than usual winter, and based on the past couple days, I'm not surprised that the winter is going to follow suit.  So far we are running a bit below average for this time of year, and there is a chance of rain today.

Actually here in the midwest, that all could translate into more snow farther south, and less in the north, than in the typical year.

No, it hung and wouldn't load.  I'm on a pretty fast connection but it has major firewall/nanny issues.

Snowfall mostly occurs between freezing and about 12 degrees F, though, so just colder temps doesn't tell you all that much about snowfall.  The heaviest snowfalls we've received here in the last ten years were mostly on days that were fairly warm, then fell below freezing and the white stuff started falling and didn't stop for a day or two.

Average temps, slightly above average snow fall for us, if their right. That's about what we had last year, except we had way more than average snow, all in the first couple weeks of February.

Sounds a lot like our conditions for a deep snow....warm front out of the Gulf....cold front out of Canada....and where the two collide you get a band of heavy, wet snow that packs down to a few inches of ice on the road....and then all the damn transplanted yankees try to drive like it's dry pavement and wind up in the ditch.....then jump out of they cars and claim southerners can't drive on snow.

And yes, we don't have much snow removal equipment. This happens about once every ten years are so so why waste all that money on something that might get used one day per year and two days every ten years.

I was born and raised in Texas. I didn't learn to drive on the snow until my first duty station, Norfolk, Va, when we got some 10+ inches one winter (1977). 1978 brought another massive snowfall. I found an empty parking lot and made myself lose control, regain control, etc. It took a little practice. The fact IS, at least here in Texas, people just CAN'T drive on the snow (or ice). Damned Yankee or not!!

When I lived up in MN, I always laughed at the morons that were off in the ditch. They THOUGHT that because they had 4WD that they would be ok going the speed limit. LMAO!!

I guess the reason I've always been able to drive on ice and snow without problems is that I learned to drive on muddy red clay dirt roads. When they get wet, and full of other peoples ruts you learn to when to gas it, when to brake, etc.

All my life I've daydreamed about having a flat 40 acre field of wet red clay to play on.....get a running start on a good ramp and then going spinning round and round across that field.

Yeah, living near a large military base and with a major Interstate highway route through the area, it's a great idea just to stay the Hell off the roads no matter how great you think your snow driving is, because there will sure as Hell be plenty of other people on the road who aren't even close.

Just no more ice storms or blizzards here this year would be good for me. We need a break.

Y'all didn't have a damned blizzard last winter.... remember, I live close enough to OKC to know this. Snow, yes. Blizzard...... hardly.

?

Dec. 24th?

"Blizzard"~sustained winds or frequent gusts reaching or exceeding 35 mph (56 km/h) which lead to blowing snow and cause visibilities of ¼ mile (or 400 m) or less, lasting for at least 3 hours.

We had winds at 50 + mph for 4 hours that day with snow rates at 1 1/2 to 3" per hour.

So.....we are going to have winter.  Like we do every year.  Not as bad as some, and not as good as others have been . Sorry Odin, I really dug our weather on 12/24.  Down here anyway.  It is rare we get SNOW.  We usually get freezing rain, or ice.  I call it Frain.  I hate that crap.  I made a snowman.  That was cool.

Lower temps and more snow here.  Kind of what we've been expecting.  It's time.

I didn't check to see how far back they compared records, but it seems our weather has been returning to what it was pretty long ago.
