Study: Racism played a role in foreclosure crisis

Predatory lending aimed at racially segregated minority neighborhoods led to mass foreclosures that fueled the U.S. housing crisis, according to a new study published in the American Sociological Review.

Predatory lending typically refers to loans that carry unreasonable fees, interest rates and payment requirements.

Poorer minority areas became a focus of these practices in the 1990s with the growth of mortgage-backed securities, which enabled lenders to pool low- and high-risk loans to sell on the secondary market, Professor Douglas Massey of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and PhD candidate Jacob Rugh, said in their study.

The financial institutions likely to be found in minority areas tended to be predatory -- pawn shops, payday lenders and check cashing services that "charge high fees and usurious rates of interest," they said in the study.

1. NOOOOO. Racism and homeownership??? Couldn't be

These practices couldn't possibly have anything to do with the fact that banks were forced by the government and groups like ACORN, and Jesse Jackson to make loans to high risk candidates, could it?

As for the pawn shops, payday lenders, and check cashing places, they are spread around my town.  (could be because the poor areas aren't safe places to have lots of cash on hand)

It's racism if you do NOT loan to high-risk groups.

It's racism if high-risk groups default on loans.

Rinse. Repeat.

DUmbasses unwittingly prove the CRA and ACORN are to blame.

And they're maxing-out their Racist CardTM...fast! People have grown exhausted by incessant claims of racism after voting for Obama.

This is based on the flawed reasoning that if there is a correlation between A and B, and another correlation between B and C, it necessarily follows that anything done to A is with the intent of affecting C, and in this premise, with an evil intent.

In this case the lending practices of the banks ("A") are products of the raw economics of the market interest rate, legal constraints or lack thereof, and permissive Federal loan guarantees that biased them in favor of making high risk loans in the first place ("B") since the Feds had already absorbed the principal risk, which enabled the banks to make shitty loans and then still resell them, with the inevitable economic consequences for the high-risk borrowers when the money train stopped.  The fact that the population of high-risk borrowers in B correlated to being minority membership ("C") was a thing irrelevant to the bankers' decisions has been completely ignored.

Also ignored is the fact that our politicians like Frank and Dodd spearheaded and then protected the economically-unsound policies that set up the minority buyers for failure, so a much sounder argument could be made that either THEY are the racists here and out to destroy the Black and Hispanic middle classes, or, alternatively, that our popularly-elected Congress is a completely unfit tool for rational economic planning.  Neither of those hypotheses would be sufficiently politically correct for a sociology prof in modern academia to pursue, of course, particularly at a point in time when their fellow Liberals have a stranglehold on both houses of Congress.

Bullshit studies like this do not add anything positive to the (Very, very well-earned) reputation of sociology as a fake science.

OH NOES!!!!! I agree with the DUmbass.  Government racism, directly violating the Constitution Amendment 14 of equal protection under the law. "Its Equal Protection Clause requires each state to provide equal protection under the law to all people within its jurisdiction."  Clearly whites were discriminated against under lending regulations.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Racism, huh?  Someone better tell my blue-eyed blonde ex-wife about that while she still has a house to live in as they're foreclosing on her.

Then again, don't.  Bitch needs to pay HER credit card bills instead of pissing it away on a house she knew she never could afford in the first place.

According to an ex-boss ,female, black, from Georgia raised in the 1950's.  All this started with affirmative action.

She was the only Black I had ever met that was opposed to that social rule.  I believe it all started out when her son was denied a grant to college so a female with the brains of an ant was taken simply because they needed a quoter of females.  The College was an all black College in VA. I believe the first one in the country.

It is only when the hens come home to roost that some people wake up.

Cheer up Sparky, I know you must feel great glee that the EX-wife has it much worse without you.   This is normal, my Ex went from Officer to a job like yours to driving a school buss.   I pitied his new wife who though she had it made in the shade.  Then he died and not one tear was shed by his 2 children that he had not contacted for 5-6 years.

Love Stinks.

On the government enforced racism subject ....... we had a fairly large flood down here in the Music City this May and I have a friend in an area that was badly flooded (it stopped just inside my backyard fence TG).  His neighborhood is pretty well mixed but still has a majority of "caucasians as is he.  FEMA came in, did their thing, repair guys came in and cut out his flooring and cut the drywall out to just above the water line. He finally gave up waiting for FEMA to decide whether they would cover his appliances & furnace/ac.  However, .... back at the end of june, beginning of july, he noticed appliance boxes at his neighbor's curb and went in to visit ... come to find out, FEMA had covered the expenses to rip out the flooring, replace ALL of the drywall and all of the neighbor's appliances, furnace/ac and even light fixtures and ceiling fan, and the neighbor & family has moved back in.... same flood level, same amt of damages, very similar cookie cutter house, same FEMA agent interviewing both of them on the same day ....ummm let's say the neighbor is NOT caucasian.
