A Good Guy Wins One
« on: October 01, 2010, 10:45:45 AM »
Quote
A pizza deliveryman who shot two would-be robbers to death in east Charlotte said Tuesday that he didn’t draw his concealed pistol until the last possible second, when he thought he would be killed.

Throughout the robbery attempt, as the men hit and pistol-whipped him inside a cooler at an east Charlotte Pizza Hut, the driver said he kept his right elbow pinned tightly against his body – holding a Glock 22 under his shirt and out of view.

He said he didn’t want to use the gun unless he was forced to. But as one of the men lifted his shirt, nearly exposing the gun, the deliveryman opened fire.

The two men killed – Gregory James Hardy and Dauntrae Wallace – were both 21-year-old convicted felons, one on probation and one awaiting trial on unrelated charges.

Police were searching Tuesday night for a third suspect who fled the attempted robbery and was possibly wounded.

No charges have been filed against the deliveryman.

The dead have lengthy records and everyone around here thinks the guy did great getting rid of them....just wish he could have gotten the other one.

He thinks he shot the third one between the shoulder blades...he did leave a blood trail so maybe he died in the bushes somewhere.

From the same article:

Quote
Pizza Hut employees have been fired for using guns in self-defense. Chris Fuller, a spokesman for Pizza Hut’s national corporate office, said that “in the interest of our employees’ safety, we don’t discuss our safety policies publicly.”

However, there have been several reports in recent years in which Pizza Hut officials said corporate policy forbids employees from having weapons while on the job.

A Pizza Hut employee in Columbia resigned last year after police said he shot and killed a robbery suspect. The employee resigned, according to Pizza Hut’s Fuller, because of the company’s policy forbidding employees from carrying firearms.

In one well-publicized May 2004 case, a Pizza Hut employee in Carmel, Ind., was fired after he shot and killed a would-be robber. And in 2008, a Pizza Hut worker in Des Moines, Iowa, lost his job after shooting and wounding a robbery suspect. Both of those Pizza Hut employees were delivery drivers.

FACT: A company cannot deny you your constitutional rights

FACT: Working at a company is not a constitutional right

It also makes sense that a company does not want employees playing the hero where reckless actions may aggravate  situation.

However, what I would like to see is the abolishment of blanket policies and see such matters judged case-by-case.

What many employers fail to comprehend is the fact that those who possess a permit to carry are the "good guys". They have been vetted by the local police or sheriff. They have NO criminal record. I would like to see a law on the books forcing companies that forbid the legal carry of firearms at the workplace, or store, mall, etc., be required to accept ALL responsibility for the patrons or employees safety.

That's not the way an employer looks at it.

They're looking at it as an entity that can be sued for an employee's behavior no matter how justified.

They're looking at it as a possible PR nightmare if some over-reacting customer sees their employees walking around strapped.

They're looking at it with the mindset that if they condone such actionsr they encourage it and some employee may be capped off trying to play Charles Bronson.

Their motives are not ignorant, unfounded or malevolent. I genuinely sympathize with them because their concerns are sincere and well-illustrated by past events.

But that doesn't mean I agree with them making zero-tolerance blanket policies. They should judge on a case-by-case basis.

Good for him!

Of course the ACLU certainly won't be picking up his cause. :eyeroll:

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

To me the important thing is he's a living armed robbery victim. To me it's screw the pizza job as long as I'm still alive.

I wouldn't resign though. I'd make them fire me just so I could tell the story the rest of my life how Pizza Hut values criminals more than employees.

I concur with what SB said. Employers have to look at things with exposure to legal litigation. They do have a fiduciary responsibility to company share holders.

A lot of things in our society could be changed for the better with some common sense Tort reform. Foremost amongst the things tort reform could accomplish for the better is our overall cost of living reducedand increases lowered and loinger in between them.  Impacted the most would be the poor & middle class because their disposal income would buy more for less. Health insurance would be cheaper and rate increases probably lower also.

It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.
