The purpose of the survey is to collect some data to help us figure out who our members are, and how you feel about Democratic Underground. We want as many people as possible to take it, so we can get a really good sample. We hope that the results help give us some idea of where we go from here. This survey is open to all active DU members who registered before August 20, 2010 (the date when we first announced the survey).

Please be aware that this survey was not drawn up professionally; it is merely a series of questions that the DU Administrators would like answers to.

Your responses to this survey are anonymous. Neither your username nor any other personally identifiable information will be saved along with your answers, so the administrators will not be able to figure out how you or any other individual responded to the questions. The usernames of members who have taken the survey are saved separately, to ensure that each member takes the survey only one time.

The survey will be available for two weeks, until 11:59 PM Pacific Time, Thursday October 14, 2010. After that time, no more responses will be accepted.

As much as possible, we want the survey to be "fresh" for each member, and we do not want chatter or spin on the site to influence the way people respond. Therefore, while you are permitted to discuss the survey in this thread, the moderators have been instructed to delete any posts about the survey if they are posted anywhere else. This restriction will be lifted once the survey has been completed in two weeks time.

Thank you for taking the time to take our survey.

I wonder if it is as long and confusing as the New Rules unveiled earlier this year?

Someone with a mole has to take it and tell us what is in it.
I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

I would advise any mole that takes it, Wait a few days before reporting anything. If there are just a few who have filled out the survey at the time of the post, it makes it easier for Skins & co. to identify you.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Attitudes toward Forum Administration and Moderation

IMPORTANT: When answering the following questions, please keep in mind that the ultimate responsibility for how the discussion forum is moderated and administered lies with the DU administrators. The administrators provide the moderators with detailed instructions about how the DU rules should be interpreted, which posts should be removed, and how the forum should be moderated. The actions of the DU moderators should be seen (as much as possible) as reflecting the will of the DU administrators.

The character of a discussion forum often depends on how actively the discussions are moderated. Some people prefer that forums be actively moderated, to try to keep the discussions relatively civil and promote thoughtful interactions between participants. Other people prefer less active moderation, so members have greater freedom to express themselves, even if uncivil or disruptive postings are more common. Which of the following is closest to your opinion?

I believe that Democratic Underground should be more actively moderated than it currently is.
I believe that Democratic Underground should be less actively moderated than it currently is.
I believe the moderating on Democratic Underground is just about right.

Overall, do you feel that Democratic Underground bans too many people, not enough people, or an appropriate number?

    Too many people
    Not enough people
    An appropriate number of people
    Don't know/Other

Democratic Underground gives members the ability to inform moderators about potential problems by clicking the "Alert" link on any post. When an alert is sent, the moderators always evaluate the post and decide whether to take action. Quite often, however, nobody will alert on posts that violate our rules. Which is closest to your opinion of how these posts should be handled?

If nobody sends an alert on a particular post, it is safe to assume that nobody wants the moderators to get involved. Moderators should evaluate posts and take action ONLY IF a member sends an alert.
A rule violation is a rule violation; it should not matter if someone sends an alert. Moderators should pro-actively search for potential problems, and should take action even if nobody sends an alert.
    Don't know/Other

Would you like to be able to hide your posts from other DU members you consider abusive (and similarly let other DU members hide their posts from you)?

    Yes
    No
    Don't know/Other

Has forum moderation that you perceive to be overly active or unfair caused you to participate less on Democratic Underground than you would like?

    Yes
    No
    Don't know/Other

Have uncivil or disruptive DU members caused you to participate less on Democratic Underground than you would like?

    Yes
    No
    Don't know/Other

Have attacks against President Obama or Democrats caused you to participate less on Democratic Underground than you would like?

    Yes
    No
    Don't know/Other

Has hostility toward criticism of President Obama or Democrats caused you to participate less on Democratic Underground than you would like?

    Yes
    No
    Don't know/Other

Should Democratic Underground require that all criticism of President Obama or Democrats be constructive?

    Yes
    No
    Don't know/Other

Should there be any limits on what insults or attacks members can post about President Obama or Democrats on Democratic Underground?

Yes, there should be limits on such insults or attacks.
No, members should be able to post whatever they like about President Obama or Democrats.
    Don't know/Other

Currently, Democratic Underground does not permit members to advocate voting against Democrats, or in favor of third-party candidates (except in rare cases). Should members be permitted to support left-of-center third-party candidates on Democratic Underground, even in races where Democrats are running?

    Yes
    No

Do you feel that the DU rules are difficult to follow?

Well I did get to answer the survey before I got banned. Maybe that had something to do with my banning. However, I am quite sure it has more to do with me posting here. Let me add that me posting here isn't against DU rules. So, unless they made up some new rules...

Thanks for the info, BattleHymn.  I was planning to answer the survey but was also curious about what types of questions they were asking beforehand.

I'm torn on how to answer the survey, if at all.  Is it worth it to throw a mole into the volcano?  Should I answer the survey toting the party line?  Should I answer the survey truthfully?

If the party liners are the majority of the survey takers, then the possibility of more primitives swimming off the island or getting tombstoned could happen.

Choices, choices.

It's easy to answer with a DUmp mindset.  Depends on how much you want to try & tweak the admins.  I'd be very careful in answering it.

You're just 1 of a number or people booted. You can always register at OET at least if you want like-minded discussion.

Nah! I am done signing up at political forums. And I don't mind having discussions where I disagree with others. As long as it can remain respectful/civil. I will say that I have been treated better here than DU. Now isn't that strange? Ok, so maybe  not in those early days here... :p

I'm stunned you made it as long as you have.

Frankly, I don't trust this survey, nor do I trust DU's motive behind it. Even though Skins did state that those taking the survey would not be tagged with any personally identifiable markers that directly tie the participants to their answers, nowhere does skins mention a participant's IP number, and if that is recorded..

Then its a matter of taking the 'unidentifiable' IP address, and straining it through other software to determine what users on DU have used that IP recently. In the days of dialup and AOL, the results would have been a range of users. Nowadays most people's IP numbers seldom change. I have been using the one I have now for better than a year.

One of the things I have noticed about the survey, is it touches upon things that were covered in Skinner's final 'venting' thread -- things that were to be no longer discussed at DU. If you still support the forbidden positions, you are a rabble rouser and obviously need to be removed.

Yep, I totally agree. I think the survey may have been the last straw. I answered it honestly. It gave him more reason to boot me.

173. I AM a computer geek, and can tell you this:
There is no such thing as anonymity over the internet. Ever. Full stop.

What there is, however, is the ability to create scenarios that make it *really, really, annoying* to track someone down. They do explicitly note that they are tracking who takes the survey, and that, combined with log files, leaves enough of a trail with IP/post matching, to track you.

It really comes down to a matter of trust, and whether or not you trust the geeks of DU.

All that being said, your post does point out that certain groups on DU may be under-represented, specifically those who are *very* concerned about their anonymity.

After the beginning thank you/love you spiel right before the survey begins they ask 2 qualifier questions. When you joined and your post count. They fill those in for you all ready with the year and the post total range (1-500, 500-1000, 1000-1500 ect).

Now, likes already been mentioned it's a trust thing but when they can plunder the DB to give you that info automatically up front before you even start you do have to wonder.

Where's the tough questions? These are a few of the questions I'd like to see answered.

1- When did you start using illegal drugs?
2- What drugs do you use?
3- Are you now or have you ever been under the care of a psychiatrist?
4- Are you now taking  Dr. prescribed mine/mood altering drugs.
5- Do you currently have a job?
6- Have you ever held a job for more than a week?
7- Are you on welfare?
8- Are you on disability?
9- Do you receive foodstamps?
10- Do you benefit from other private charities?
11- Is your rent government subsidized?
12- How many abortions have you had?
13- What sex are you?
14- What race are you?
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin
