The Heartwrenching Reality Of Living Under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

Posted on August 14, 2010

I have been in the Army for almost twelve years. My very first day in Basic Training, I knew I had found my calling, and I knew that I would stay at least 20 years. I also knew that I was gay, and I wasn’t supposed to be there. My recruiter made me sign a piece of paper saying I was not gay, never had sex with anyone of the same gender, and never attempted to marry anyone of the same gender. I signed it because I did not understand to what extent the Army was going to make me hide a part of myself.

For the past 11 years I have had to conceal my family from my friends. Soldiers, with whom I sweat, bleed and cry, can’t ever meet the woman I love. Soldiers that depend on me for sound judgment and advice can never know who I go to when I need advice or solace. Friends who would die for me can’t ever meet the person who makes me want to live. Don’t get me wrong, there are a few Soldiers who know I am gay, but it takes a long time to learn if you can trust someone with a secret that can get you fired. So I don’t make friends easily, and I never have get-togethers at my house, and I don’t go to military functions very often; because my home life cannot mix with my work life.

I am in Iraq now, separated from the love of my life, and I can’t share that pain with anyone. If I am hurt or I die while in combat here, she will not be notified. She can’t even visit me in the hospital. We have to depend on an intricate web of lies and code words to get us through a year of separation. I find it strange to think that I am in a foreign country, making sure that these people are able to exercise their democratic rights, ensuring that these people get their basic civil rights to life, liberty and happiness, while I don’t get those same basic rights. I can’t even tell you my name, because I will lose my job for even attempting to exercise my first amendment right to free speech.

Turkey baster...don't leave home without it.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Wah, wah, wah.  Lies make a crappy foundation for anything.

Yes, that is so true.  My philosophy for anything is if you are part of something, BELONG to it, own it.
If you are gay, the military is not going to be the right niche for you.
If you're an atheist, don't become a priest.
If you're a Catholic, abide by the tenets of the church.

Really very simple math here.
Sneaking into a country doesn't make you an immigrant any
more than breaking into someone's house makes you part of the family.

Wow.

That's almost as creepy as Thor and his Lady Gaga videos.

If I'm supposed to be feel bad, I don't. Not at all. I like the fact that you want to fight for the greatest Country on the planet, but you make your own choice to either join or not.

Or you and your Erasure collection, masturbating to posters of the Village People.

something struck me about this story as a bouncy.  I have 11 years in.  She claims 12.  So by my math, that was in 98, well after DADT was signed into law.  I don't remember ever being asked to sign a paper about sexual orientation.  Isn't that the "don't ask" part of the law?  Maybe Thor would know a little better, since I'm sure recruitment policies haven't changed that much since DADT came out.

I was on recruiting duty at that time.  No such paperwork was in place.

I left recruiting in Jan 90. Pretty much as long as the enlistee answered "no" to the homo question on the DD 1966, they were good to go as far as enlisting. That said, if they were caught lying, they could be discharged. (That goes for ANY lie on the 1966) I forget the particulars, but there was one section on the 1966 that we used to "x" out in its entirety.

I'm going with she's twisting facts to fit her agenda. I remember signing a form at MEPS in 2002 that told me what was forbidden under DADT (sex with another guy, trying to marry another guy, shit like that), not if I was gay or if I had ever done any gay act.
