Colvin in hospital after bat punctures chest (Chicago Cubs)
« on: September 19, 2010, 09:42:06 PM »
Quote
MIAMI -- Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin is not expected to play again this season. He'll spend at least the next several days at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center undergoing testing while doctors seek to prevent him from having a collapsed lung.

Doctors are using a pneumothorax procedure to prevent a collapsed lung, since air entered Colvin's chest wall after a broken bat punctured his chest on the left side near his collarbone in Sunday's 13-3 win over the Marlins at Sun Life Stadium.

The procedure involves having a tube in the chest opening to keep air from harming the lung.

Holy shit, that doesn't look good.  Does he get a replacement?

MLB really needs to address the bat issue.  Things like this will keep happening until someone loses an eye or worse.

Meh. It's a part of the sport. Sorta like the danger in sustaining a broken tush by the gals who do roller derby.

Bitchslap for cluelessness.

I remember very well having played my share of baseball. With wooden bats.

As I said, it's a part of the sport. What part of that don't you get?

But, weren't the bats all ash back then?  The bat that got Colvin is maple.  Maple bats have been shattering with a high frequency ever since they were introduced.

Dunno about any of that. So move the bats back to ash. If that's the answer.

Bottom line is, shit happens. You stand in a batter's box with some guy whizzing a hard ball within two feet of your head at 95 mph and you're trying to hit the damned ball with a wooden stick, shit sometimes happens.

End of ****ing story.

Hey, didn't mean to ruffle your feathers, Euph. My bad. That's what I get for trying to be a smartass this early on a Monday.
