I fried okra and everybody ate it...

my husband brought it home from the in-laws so I had to cook it.  It's one of those vegetables I won't go out of my way to buy but if someone gives me some, I'll cook it.

I think it's pretty harmless and I'm not sure why it gets a bad rap. My teens ate it as usual. Since it was fried, they didn't mind (I don't fry much!) I don't like the boiled methods or even the gumbo-ish versions myself.

Do you eat it?

franksolich: nope.

1. I love it fried.

I have enjoyed okra pickles, okra stewed with tomatoes, and okra in gumbo. It's very high in calcium and fiber. I also like the idea of eating thistles. I especially like it as a summer replacement for hash browns on the breakfast or brunch plate.

2. I have had it fried in restaurants (I don't fry much at home) and love it. I also love it pickled. I have actually found that Allen's okra, canned, it pretty good in soup, for those of us up here who don't grow our own.

3. I love fried okra. I dredge mine in equal amounts of flour and cornmeal and fry it in my cast iron skillet until it's crispy and a little past golden brown. I also like it in gumbos and added to veggie soups.

8. Must be the Arkansas way

My sister fixes it that way too. YUM! We never get okra around here.

4. For gumbo you should saute it before addinng to the gumbo.

It keeps it from getting that slimy texture. Sort of seals all the moisture inside. Makes a world of difference

5. I do mine very simply. Slice okra crosswise in 1/3" pieces, dredge in cornmeal (not cornbread mix) and fry in a small amount of corn oil. Drain on paper towels or brown paper bags, add salt. It is utterly delicious.

11. My mom's trick is to fry it crisp in bacon grease...and once it's nice and brown, add a little cornmeal to the pan. It will cling lightly to the okra and remove any slimy feel. It really is easy.

6. When I lived in the South, it ate it all the time...

Now, I love it Indian style, and frankly, don't do frying very well, or I'd try to make it myself.

This and french fries, I'll let the restaurant do.

You know, the cooking and baking forum on Skins's island has been rather lackluster lately, probably because hippywife Mrs. Alfred Packer's been absent.

One wonders why that is; perhaps hippyhubby Wild Bill cooked her and ate her.

Maybe it is pot plant harvesting time and she is busy canning, bagging, sealing, making brownies, whatever...and the hippyhubby is laid out on the couch, naked, drooling into a colostomy bag.

Damn you're good, sir.

Awesome.

I'm at another block in my upcoming War and Peace-length sex novel about hippywife Mrs. Alfred Packer.

Mrs. Alfred Packer of course is a notorious sinophobe, a racist; can't stand the Chinese or Chinese-made products.  Has something against Celestials, yellow people.

However, on the other hand, hippyhubby Wild Bill likes Chinese food.

So Mrs. Alfred Packer has fed Wild Bill the cookware peddler, making Hop Sing into chop suey and chow mein.

And now Wild Bill wants more.....

When in the south the first time I saw Okra was working in a hospital that served it out of a can to the patients.----YUCCCCCK all slimey and horrid.

My room mate was southern born and taught me how to cook okra with no slime.

Fried or steamed no slime.  For a Yankee this was a delight, I never had turnip greens or collads before, mustard greens just lettice , dandi lion greens and spinech.

We had cabbage and brussel sprouts, asperagas and such but none of the southern greens.

Avacaedos were new to me as were artichokes and egg plant.

Come to think of it I didn't have Chinese, Mexican or even Pizza until I was over 20 years old.    We Yankees were a meat and potato fans ---the tomatos was from the french side.

Okra is an essential ingredient in my gumbo.  It gives it the right viscosity.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Mine too. I also love fried okra but I have had some that was pretty bad.

RABBIT FOOD!

Sorry, I'm a carnivore! I do like fried okra, though. Can't grow it up here. Not enough season.

Very similar to fried zucchini. "Toots" fries green tomatoes too, which are quite tasty!

Writer's block can be a tough thing to overcome.
Have you written the customary incestuous courtesy-screw sex chapter yet? Where the only sex hippywife experiences is because a homeless bum feels sorry for her.
You could use Cal-Piggy poetry for, (eeech...) dare I say inspiration.

My only suggestion would be to buy a used electro-shock therapy unit off of eBay first, to help you recover from that ordeal.  :-)

You know, last week I finished reading Kitty Kelly's biography of Oprah Winfrey.

Since television isn't part of this life, I wasn't aware she was such a phenomenon.

I'm kind of torn, though.  Kelly really trashes the narcissism, the egoism, the materialism, the decadence, of Oprah, and that sounds credible, but on the other hand, Kelly has written some other biographies totally devoid of facts.

Maybe it's that blind squirrel finding an acorn thing, and Kelly's telling the truth.

That is exactly my opinion of it - maybe its because I have never had it cooked the right way.
