Chicago Mayor Daley Opts Against Re-Election, Opens Door for Rahm
« on: September 07, 2010, 01:44:36 PM »
Mayor Richard Daley says he will not run for re-election in 2011.

"The truth is I have been thinking about this for the past several months," Daley said at a City Hall news conference. "In the end this is a personal decision, no more, no less."

Daley spoke for less than five minutes and took no questions.

Longtime Chicago Mayor Richard Daley announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election, a stunning decision that apparently ends a political dynasty that dominated the city for more than a half century and paves the way for Rahm Emanuel to chase his dream job.

Emanuel, the White House chief of staff, once told Fox News that if Daley, 68, didn't run in the February election, he would likely throw his hat in the ring, raising the possibility that his days in the White House are numbered.

"That's a job I really want," Emanuel once told Fox News' Bret Baier.

But Emanuel didn't offer any hints that he was still interested after Daley's announcement.

I've been listening to Chicago radio since the announcement.  There are about 100 names I've already heard bandied about.  Most wouldn't be familiar to those who don't live there but one interesting name I heard floated was Bill Daley, the brother of the current mayor.

Could it be that another Chicago/IL thug is under investigation?

Well its probably going to be more of the same so who cares about which names going to get in unless they can prove the elections not going to be just a formality in getting another thug in office

Doubt it.  Mayor Daley's wife has been through a number of illnesses in the past 10 years which was a major reason why he chose not to run again.  He'd win with 60+% of the vote if he ran again.

Whomever it is, they won't have complete, dominating control of the down state democrat politico's. IL, if they elect a Republican Governor, will finally get concealed carry. :cheersmate:

Same for Wisconsin.

Very interesting. I always thought Rahm did not want Chief Of Staff job, he was only going to do it a couple of years. Rahm has not been shy about wanting Daley's job.  ::)

I don't know who would want that job, the public pension blow up that will happen this year or next is not going to be pretty.

Is this Mayor the son of the Mayor Daley who was in power back in the 1970's.?

I seem to remember reading a list of quotes from the Mayor of Chicago a long time ago and the best one I thought was----"Don't confuse me with the facts"----or am I thinking of someone else.?

Don't fracking fool yourself.

There is a fracking unmitigated enormous amount of rapture political power behind the public sector unions.
Coinciding with a shitload of guaranteed votes equating to a shitload of over-priced wages, medical, retirement, and pension benefits.

No doubt it, the union slugs are going to get the hardest spank-down when the municipalities go bankrupt in the next two to five years.

Just listening to Mike Ditka...he's NOT running for Chicago Mayor.

Too bad.  He'd be worth it for the entertainment value alone.

Here's where it gets kind of fuzzy.  Not a good day for me, I stayed in bed napping and had Fox on the TV and I believe this is what I heard someone say.

They felt that Rahm has been given the short shift from White House and has to go.  In order to do this peacefully, Obama gave him an offer he can not refuse.   Somehow they convinced Daley to retire and they would by hook or by crook get Rahm elected to the coverted position as Mayor of Chicago.

Seeing all the foul ups of Obama and his team of screwballs, I will bet dollars for donuts that Nepotism will come in here some where and Bill Daley will continue the line.

If any of you who were wide awake and listening to Fox and heard this exchange, please tell me what I missed of the interview.

Chicago just ain't Chicago without a Daley at the Helm.

Rahmbo doesn't have the organizational strength to win.  It's a city machine, and Rahm has never been a big part of it.  I believe he did some fundraising for Daley a long time ago.  If Daley's brother or a prominent businessperson (i.e. liberal Republican) don't run, I'd suspect an alderman will win.

Ah but you forget that Obama and team from Chicago can run interference for him.  Heck if they can take a nobody and place them in the White House then they can find a way to get a presidential adviser a job as a Mayor.

Anyway you look at it, I hark back to the days of Mobsters going to the mats, blood shed and more skull duggery then we have seen in 80 years.  Darn this is a 3  event.

Among the "base" Rahm is the least liked in the administration.

I wouldn't anoint him Chicago mayor just yet.

Any election Rahm runs in will have a well funded primary challenger.

They will be at least a dozen people who run, guaranteeing a run-off because no one will get 50% on the first try.

'Stop Rahm' movement builds as aldermen jockey for Mayor Daley's job

A “Stop Rahm” movement is building. Black and Hispanic caucuses are meeting to pick candidates. And the City Council’s most powerful aldermen is vowing to serve only one term as mayor, if he chooses to make the race at all.

One day after Mayor Daley declared plans to vacate the throne, the jockeying has begun in earnest.

“With the mayor in the race, nobody would run. With the mayor out of the race, everybody [wants to] run,” said Northwest Side Ald. Tom Allen (38th), one of the “everybodys.”

In addition to a list that includes White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart and CTA Board Chairman Terry Peterson, at least a half-dozen aldermen are considering running for mayor: Allen; Bob Fioretti (2nd); Edward M. Burke (14th); Scott Waguespack (32nd); Brendan Reilly (42nd) and Tom Tunney (44th).

The heavyweight among them is Burke, who has a $6 million campaign war chest and a wealth of knowledge about where the bodies are buried at City Hall.

Rahm has kicked so many people in the balls over the past 10 years there are tons of knives out for him.
