Hey hey now, i'm PROUD to be a coconut. lol Remember also that a lot of hispanic kids simply can't afford to go to college and/or don't make grades good enough for a scholarship. I'm blessed that my Dad was educated and stressed education to me and my siblings. The thing that makes me boil is the knucklehead hispanics in school who purposely don't want to assimilate and educate themselves; they always pay later. I got relatives like this unfortunately.
I apologize if I overgeneralized, man. I know that not ALL of a group are like that. But sadly, far too many are, and I saw that in my recruiting days. In schools where I gave my nuclear power presentations, I'd ask lots of questions just to keep the kids involved. Nothing difficult or earth-shattering, mind you, just stuff that would make them feel part of the discussion.
As a general rule, however, a lot of minority kids would sit on their hands and not answer, for fear of 1--being wrong, 2--looking "too smart" in front of their classmates.
You'd be amazed how much lower the bar is set for scholarships or even admissions if you're a minority. Look at University of Michigan, for example. Go to community college for a couple of years before going to a 4-year school, and it's damned near free. I saw minority kids with 900 SAT's get full rides to USC, when white kids wouldn't even get a second glance unless they were pulling in the high-1200's.
So if people WANT to take advantage of the opportunities, they are in fact there, but sadly too many kids want to stick to the "safe" route--white, black, brown, or whatever.
