33 Trapped Chilean Miners Alive
« on: August 24, 2010, 10:49:23 AM »

Thirty-three Chilean miners trapped underground for more than two weeks have notified authorities they are still alive, but rescuers say it could take up to four months to reach them.

Chile's President Sebastian Pinera said Sunday a drill sent by rescuers nearly 700 meters into the mine came back with a message from the trapped men. He displayed the message in a television appearance.

A group of Chilean miners trapped for 17 days deep inside a collapsed mine are alive, the Chilean president, Sebastián Piñera, said tonight – but it will take at least four months to set them free.

Four months! :o  Holy crap.

I watched some of this on the news last night.  They said the rescue chamber is only 500 square feet... for 33 people.

Yep.  I heard they aren't telling em 4 months either.  Smart move I guess.  I cannot even begin to imagine.  2200 feet underground, 33 men, 500 square feet?  Holy hell.

Sounds like a horror movie!!
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

On the plus side, Chile produces some very good wines, so they shouldn't lack for a decent Chenin blanc. Might be a good idea to just stay blotto for the next season.

Agreed.  I read somewhere that the hole to pass things down is only 4" in diameter.  It will be interesting to follow, and will make a good movie...which I'm sure will happen.

There is a second hole that is 2 feet wide... they've been passing food and water through it. :)

I don't understand how they can't get people up it.  Or why they didn't build a hole to a safe room that would accomodate evacuation.

I heard that the safe room is adjacent to a cavern that is safe to venture into. Anyway, 4 months underground could drive a man nuts. He may even emerge a, God forbid, stark raving mad Democrat!

At first I agreed with you BUT then I got to wondering just how 33 men in close confinement in the dark could survive for 4 months without going stark raving mad.

To add to their discomfort there will be the overwhelming stench of body waste, sweat, burps and farts for 4 freaking months.

With little to no exercise their body's will change to a state of diarrhea and stomach upsets.

Disease will soon come from their own waste products, problems for their lungs as breathing the air will cause disease spoors to infect said lungs.

All the antibiotics sent down to them will soon become ineffective.

Imagine having to stay in an over flowing port-a potty in the dark for 4 days.  Food and water is passed in to you and as you stay alive you are also adding to the filth.    Pop this up a bit, the temperature in the Potty is around 90 degrees.

The question of where will 33 men go to the toilet  for 4 MONTHS is perhaps the most important question asked so far.

Vesta, I don't know what they may or may not have done at this time, but the trapped miners have undoubtedly created a latrine area by now, and the people tending them will have to rig something so that they can send their waste back up. It'll be a nasty job, but it's better than living in it.

My heart goes out to these unfortunate souls.  I pray that they will be rescued in a fraction of the predicted 4 months.  The hell that they will have to endure is beyond words.

Just imagine 4 more MONTHS trapped underground.

They need all of our prayers.

4 months in that stench, raw sewage, how are they getting food?

Chris, have you ever read about   " Cabin Fever "

Comes from when people are stuck usually in the north in a cabin with one or more people and they know they cannot get out for a few months due to the weather.

These miners have doctors, physiologists and what ever working to keep these miners sane.

Put yourself in their place, say you and the people you work with fell into a sink hole.    It will take time to get you all out.

That woman with the grating voice, the dude that has a giggle that really Iritates's you, the woman that crys non stop, the grumpy people that spell doom, all these people you have to spend with no escape for 4 months.

There are people that like you and people that dislike you, and then when the 4 Th, week goes by you begin to realise that none of you like each other enough to put others above their own survival.

One heck of a study on human nature here, can the miners survive with help from above ground help, or will they sooner or later revert to survival actions, fighting and acting like men in a biker bar.

I think that since they have a direct line of communication to freedom, that they will have high enough morale to keep their frustration under control. Sure things will irk them.  However, with freedom a very real possibility, all hope is not lost.

Time Magazine has a TERRIFIC article on these men, and the severe psychological challenges they're facing.

I usually loathe Time, but this time, they've really done a great job. I urge everyone to read it.  :cheersmate:
