Conservatives-what do you think about McCain?
« on: March 25, 2008, 04:25:22 PM »
I've been truly fascinated by the strong differences in opinion I've encountered from republicans regarding McCain, both IRL and in cyberspace. Here in South Dakota, it's a real mix. Half of those R I know support him, although many somewhat tepidly, a third aren't all that thrilled but are resigned to his being the nominee and will at least go through the motions of campaigning/voting for him, and a third absolutely hate his guts. I don't really recall another presumptive nominee on the R side that engendered this much difference of opinion. The consensus of many seems to be either resigned tepid acceptance, or outright dislike.

So, what's the consensus here regarding him?

Log me in under dislike and complete distrust, but since I have no other logical option, I'll vote for him anyway.........

Will I campaign for him locally.....No....

Will I contribute to his campaign or to the RNC.......No

He's on his own as far as I am concerned.

Count me in as voting for him unless he can't win or it looks like he definitely will win.

I think the internet has made the inherent dislike more obvious. I wouldn't be so quick to say that no other GOP nominee has gotten the same response McCain is getting. You will always find differing opinions. People hated Ronald Reagan at the time.....

That being said, I'm watching him closely. He is not my first choice but I will vote for him because I love my country more than I hate him. I'm counting on the bigger picture here and hoping that the GOP is able to either win back some seats or keep the Dems on their toes. I think our government works better when there is friction and no one feels "safe" as it were. They need to remember that we can vote them out just as easily as we voted them in.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

McCain might be some sort of Republican, but he's no Conservative.  I don't like him but I will like his opponent less.  I will probably have to hold my nose one more time while pulling the lever in the voting booth.

Who would you have liked to have been the nominee, if it had been up to you?

I am liking him somewhat better then during the campaign but would have preferred Fred out of those who were running.

Whoever he is running against in the GE will be imo looking to push the country towards socialism at warp speed so I will do anything I can to prevent that from becoming a reality.

Well now, John McCain wasn't my first choice.

Richard Cheney was my first choice, but alas he won't run, even though the country badly needs him.

Duncan Hunter was my second choice.

And then it got scrambled, as to who I liked.

But I don't have any particular problems with McCain; he's 100% pro-life and 100% pro-lower taxes.

I think the disgruntled ones will be pleased with his vice-presidential choice, and the grumbling will dissipate.

McCain is a RINO.  Simple as that.  There's no freakin way I'm voting for anyone on the D side of the aisle though.

I would vote for McCain much more enthusiastically if he picks someone more conservative for VP.  Huckabee would do.

Fred was my guy until he dropped out.  After that it was Huckabee.

I respect him as a man and REALLY don't want him as a President, but he beats the crap out of the other options.

Vote for him, yes, with a clothespin on my nose; donate or campaign, I couldn't make myself do that.  He's an anti-gunner, apparently either not too wild about the First Amendment either or was all-too-easily duped on McCain-Feingold, has (if this is even possible) less commitment to secure borders and immigration control than Dubya, and has a miniscule grasp (if any at all) of Conservative economic principles.

BUT all that said, he has a non-insane foreign policy perspective and does not view the Defense Department as a cow to be butchered to supply beef to the homeless.

I am very grateful to McCain that he has taught me whoever is President doesn't matter to my life.  Well, actually I already knew that but it is nice to be reminded from time to time.

The nice thing about this election season is there is no suspense, whoever wins in November, our next POTUS will be a Democrat.

I am voting for him holding my nose and most likely going to get ripped afterwards. I don't trust him and don't like him. I was going to stay home on election night but that would do a disservice to this country. We can do better then McCain but there is always next time.

I'll vote for him with no reservations.  We're never going to get the "perfect" candidate who falls inline with all of our beliefs.

I think he'll actually work for whats best for this country for the most part, where the other two will work for whats best to get themselves reelected.

Well, lucky for us we couldn't get a more imperfect candidate.  I'm just listening to Rush go over his "throw America under the bus speech" today.  I can see why John Kerry wanted him as a running mate.

The speech where he sounds like Al Gore on global warming, and like John Kerry on international affairs..........that speech?
