Big Brother is coming after me
« on: August 23, 2010, 10:59:00 AM »
I put in a on line answer to a couple of car insurance sites for free estimates on car insurance under my husbands name.

I was not to happy when this occurred.

88 year old mother [mine] calls to tell me some insurance company in the area was trying to contact me, not Hubby about insurance.

Questions, Mom called back but the original caller could not tell her anything just that her phone number had come up to call.

Spooky, as my name had not been given or anything but home number for Hubby .

How did they get my Moms home phone number, know who I am etc.

The Twilight's Zone comes to mind, how did the internet site connect my Hubby to my Mother.??

You do realize that by posting this, the Megacorporation Intelligence Office now has confirmation that it actually was you that posted the original inquiry, don't you...?

NICB. The National Insurance Crime Bureau has a database that makes the CIA's and FBI's look like a policeman's pocket pad. When I was at the Auto Theft Task Force, I had access to it. There were times that I would be trying to find information and run dry in all state and county databases, as well as Accurint. NICB always had the goods.

This is odd, neither of us have any kind of police record, except for one accident when Hubby was 18 and put his car into a pole in a blizzard, 40 years ago.

My Ex-father in law was an insurance adjuster and for the heck of it [or so he said] he ran my name and #ss number through the system and found that I did not exist except for a co-driver on the present and past  policy's.

I am I would think on the Government Security list as a family member of a service man in the Nuclear Navy.

The IRS can track me back to the age of 18 where I worked and where I lived.

I know the insurance industry is very hungry for customers, had I used my name to make a request for an insurance quote I would be outraged but the jump from my husbands name to my Mothers phone number to try to contact my Hubby is unreal.

Someone made a mistake--like the Plumbers who used tape over the locks on the door at WaterGate and blew up our world.

This is an eye opener for me, it does not matter if you live a life that is free of any kind of law or court or any kind, except divorce court, when people want your money or business they will find a way to find out just how much money they can get from you.

Crazy, I asked for an insurance quote and because the company's could not ---perhaps I typos my home phone number, they tracked down Hubby's mother in law.

Don't share personal stuff over the internet.

If you want quotes from insurance companies, call them directly.  Some websites will sell your personal information.
If you want to worship an orange pile of garbage with a reckless disregard for everything, get on down to Arbys & try our loaded curly fries.

Go into whitepages.com.

All kinds of things show up....who you are related to even.

My father is in there as a relation to my brother and SIL....with his age as 88.

He's been dead for 10 years.
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

It could of been just a random phone solicitor that had nothing to do with the online quote request.

My mom died with literally no estate, so the lawyer that handled the little remaining paperwork said any unsecured loans could be ignored.  My brother had to shut off Mom's phone to get rid of the debt collectors...I don't remember how many copies of the death certificate he sent out before he gave up.

Then he shut off his own phone because they started calling him.

Despite the fact that I'd married and moved away, they then began to call my phone.  After explaining repeatedly for a couple months, we started letting the machine pick up every call...and eventually shut off our phone.

Now they are calling one of my kids...

I sincerely hope your insurance thing doesn't last as long...and go through as many different companies...as my mom's debt.

MrsSmith -

I work for a timeshare company.  For some reason, whenever we get a death certificate the status is changed to deceased, but the account will still be assigned to collections.  Once collections receives a copy of the death certificate, they cancel the account.  But sometimes our company continues to assign these accounts to collections.

It's messed up.  I asked about it, but my supervisor said that was the policy and how things need to be done.

I hate it.

Oh, they just keep selling the debt to some other company.  It's been 4 years and countless companies...it's a new name every time someone gives up and answers or returns a call.

I'd be tempted to laugh at them, make an off-hand comment about getting statutory damages under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (Many collectors aren't even aware the law exists, believe it or not, let alone what it says), and then finish up with "So, when are you going to serve the summons, I want to make sure I get it personally so I can get my answer and counterclaim in on time!"

Every single claim that one makes under an insurance policy is reported to the NCIB -- so if you are in an accident, get injured and are asked if you have been injured in an accident before (and you have, but it was minor) DON'T LIE cause we know.   We will know not only about your accident but everyone who has every had one in your household.

That said, underwriting would only have access to a customer's NCIB history only after they commit to a policy.  Agents would not have access (not would customer service reps for the larger carriers).

I know in MA and FL debt collectors have one year from time of death to present to estate proof of outstanding debt.  After that they are out of luck.   I would imagine that this is a law that is common throughout most states.   If the calls continue you should report them to your state's consumer protection agency (AG usually oversees).
