Son met Sen DeMint tonight.
« on: August 19, 2010, 06:47:09 PM »
Went to a political BBQ for John Spratts(D) Republican opposition, Mick Mulvaney. About 200 people there, mostly older crowd, pretty good crowd for this small town.

My son was excited last week to hear Sen. DeMint was coming to town. He wanted to meet him so when we got there I asked the ex chairman of the county republican party and the current chairman both to introduce him to Sen. DeMint. Son got bashful, like a 15 year old will be, so I drug him up to meet Sen. DeMint myself. They spoke for a few seconds and Mr. DeMint asked if he was interested in politics. He said we need more young people involved in politics. So we walked off through the crowd. I heard someone calling my sons name and I looked back to see who it was. It was a young fellow with a necktie and short hair, maybe 30 elbowing his way through the crowd. He caught up with us and wanted to speak to may son. It was Sen. DeMints regional director. They talked a few minutes and then he gave my son his card and told him to call him tomorrow. Then he saw he was wearing his Boy Scout Venture Crew Philmont 2010 T-shirt. He mentioned that Sen. DeMint was a big supporter of the Boy Scouts and they talked a couple more minutes. He told my son again again, "Call me tomorrow. I won't forget who you are. I promise you, I'll remember you. You call me, we want to talk to you."

He was adamant, forceful, insistant that he call tomorrow. I wonder what that's all about? What would they want to discuss with a 15 year old? .....curiosity is about to kill this old cat.

If your son is interested enough to attend a political bbq and wanted to meet Sen DeMint, it stands to reason that your son may want to hear DeMint's message.

And maybe there's an opportunity for your son to be associated somehow with DeMint's campaign (with parental approval, of course).

I'd definitely hover in the area, just in case things get a little froggy for a normal 15-year-old, meaning just a little too politically intense. But you were going to do that anyway.

It's definitely worth observing.

Well, I can't wait till tomorrow to find out!

One never knows what is going to happen in those circumstances.

I was minding my own business walking down the street one day and low and behold a up and comer's was on the street corner with a huge limo, security, an entourage speaking to the 50 or so people that had gathered around and telling the crowd why he was qualified to be president.

A young man standing next to me in shirt and tie asked what I though about this mans chances of being elected was.    First thing off the top of my head as at that time I did not follow politics or have any knowledge of politics was that history has shown that usually the tallest candidate in a race was the winner.

This Candidate stood about 6'5-6 " and was a seasoned player of the game.

Next thing I knew the young man pulled me through the crowd and introduced me to the candidate and asked me to repeat what I had said.

Now I had just come from a tattoo parlor getting my Tats re colored and the young man had my arm in his hand at that spot and I really could not believe this was happening.

Up shot, I was called on the phone the next week and asked to become involved in the Campaign.    The caller identified herself as his wife,
and after 2 weeks or so I drove to a distant town with my adult kids and teenager grand kids.   We met the wife and her children also teens and we ended up driving all around one section of town putting up signs and knocking on doors with leaflets.

We all had a grand time, we were on a mission to elect a man that we had no idea what his policy's were. We all got free all beef franks and soda, got to hob nob with the rich and well known.

Problem for me was at that time no one asked me any questions about MY political feelings, we could have all been hired funeral weepers drawn by free food.

At no time were I or my family given so much as talk to about why it was important for us to give up our time on a weekend to work 10 hours for a hot dog or for the country.

That was then, today is now, we now have the internet, forums and Fox to give us some insight into what is important.

This was the beginning for me and family into just what Politics is all about.

We're waiting!

I love DeMint, he's the real deal.  He spoke at our first 2 Tea Party rally's here.  His book is also a good read.

I knew your son was special  :hi5:

Thank you. When we finished eating last night I quietly asked son to collect all the empty plates at the table and put them in the trash can. A lady said, "I see you're raising him right."....no one heard me tell him to do that so I took full credit for having wonderful parenting skills....Hey, it was my time to shine... :-)

I just thought of something. Son doesn't get home from school until 4 P.M. and it's Friday....what's the chances of the director being in the office that late on a Friday afternoon.....we'll see.

Surely the director is aware of school hours?  As you are probably aware DeMint has several irons in the fire, not all of which are political in motivation.  May be a wonderful opportunity of any sort coming from his office.

Looks like we'll have to wait until next week sometime.

Son made the call, got a lady in Sen. DeMints office and she forwarded his call to the director and......left a message to return his call on his answering machine.

Ok here it is...Director called today at noon and we talked a couple of minutes. He said to call at 4 o'clock and that he would be waiting for his call. He said he had to leave at 4:15 for some meetings. Son called and the call went straight to the director and they had a short conversation.

Son discussed some changes he wanted to make in his school. Son tried to get them made last year but got no where. All he got was a flat "NO" and they wouldn't even discuss it. Well, son was told the Sen. can't get involved until son writes a letter explaining his grievances. Then some calls can be made and things set in motion. The answer may still be "NO" but there will be some discussion and reasons given as to why not this time.

Won't go into specifics at this time but he certainly left son in a good mood.

But wouldn't young JReb like to get active (and maybe develop a political future of his own)? Obviously Senator DeMint isn't exactly in the political battle of his life this year

:rotf:

...ok I'm better now...

...but maybe son would like to get involved in Mulvaney's campaign vs Spratt in SC5, if he can? That's a nailbiter. Sounds like they thought he was a likely lad, as the saying goes.

Too bad we can't get rid of that POS Clyburn, but it looks like that's a seat for life, the way it's gerrymandered.

He is involved in a small way...Son has a lot on his plate right now what with being senior patrol leader in the Scouts, OA chapter chief, honor classes at school, church activities and JROTC.

Spratts district is heavy with Obama voters if you know what I mean.
