"Vanity posts", one of the stranger characteristics of Freepville, in my opinion

They actively discourage original thought.

Whenever someone posts an original thought on that site, it is invariably mocked and labeled as a "vanity" post.

To gain group approval, the post must be a quote from Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck, or from some extreme fringe blogger, that may very well be the actual FR member posting said comment.

If someone posts a "vanity," they are often accused of being an interloper. But if they take a minute or two to start a blog, and post a back-link to their diatribe, it's golden.

It seems that the default position of FR members is to distrust the "wisdom" of their fellow travelers, unless that wisdom can be attributed to someone ostensibly outside the FR cocoon.

In other words, Free Republic doesn't trust it's own members.

They prefer cut and paste, from thoroughly discredited imbeciles, than a single original thought from their own kind.

I think that's a pretty weird way to build any kind of "online community."

No it is to discourage wasting space with a dozen threads on one subject where all the OP is is just that persons opinion.
You know sort of like what happens at the DUmp because every last one of you crave attention and think you are the most enlightened person ever to punch a keyboard.

Kind of like kicking your own thread when it doesn`t get enough responses or whining about unreccs...something else pecular to the DUmp.

We don`t need to be childish and scream LOOK AT WHAT I THINK!!!!!!.

Effing idiot.

Ironical!!!!!11111!!!!eleventy
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

5. I don't know that it's "mocked"; they just prefer posts in their version of "GD" be articles

Basically imagine if DU was just LBN and the Lounge: they want to discuss articles on the main page and then there's a "free chat" a few clicks in that's more like the lounge.

You're free to post a sourceless post of your own rant, but you usually call it "vanity" (you call it that yourself), like a vanity tag.

I do think their "ping" system is pretty cool. And, oddly enough, FreeRepublic is much more accessible than DU according to ADA guidelines.

What does this even mean?  The ADA has guidelines for internet sites?

15. You have a similar phenomena here. The idea that there can be

no dissent from the litany. The common opinion. Everyone must tow the party, or 'un-party' line.

They actively discourage original thought.

Whenever someone posts an original thought on that site, it is invariably mocked and labeled as a "vanity" post.

To gain group approval, the post must be a quote from Rachel Madcow or Arianna Huffington, or from some extreme fringe blogger, that may very well be the actual DU member posting said comment.

If someone posts a "vanity," they are often accused of being an freeper. But if they take a minute or two to start a blog, and post a back-link to their diatribe, it's golden.

It seems that the default position of DU members is to distrust the "wisdom" of their fellow travelers, unless that wisdom can be attributed to someone ostensibly outside the DU cocoon.

Must have something to do with the American's With Disabilities Act? Maybe FR has better access for people who are blind?

  • Where are you going? I was gonna make espresso!
Actually, a big problem with the vanity posts on FR is that a lot of them are made by noobs, and libtroll noobs at that.

Freeper Troll!

FRs format is rather bland as far as forums go and having to type in all the HTML commands is kind of a pain sometimes but educational.
Having said that out of all the different forums, political or otherwise I have known the DUmp with its absolute insane posting system is the worst.

It suits stupidity perfectly because on a big thread it is almost impossible to find a comment or understand what one is commenting on.
The second response to an OP might be the tenth listed and after that it gets even harder.

That way they can post their stupid gibberish and no one can go back easily and call it.
Add into that what Frank pointed out here months ago almost none in a response will quote what they are speaking to it becomes a hodge podge of idiocy.

I think DU is an absolutely horrible board as far as being user friendly goes. I didn't like FR at 1st, it took a little getting used to, but I really like it now and people are pretty much to the point and don't ramble on.
