madinmaryland (1000+ posts) Wed Aug-11-10 04:31 PMOriginal messageIn light of the recent copyright infringement lawsuits, DU's detailed policy is as follows: http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules_detai... Copyright issues and Bandwidth Theft Do not post entire copyrighted articles. If you wish to reference an article, provide a brief excerpt and include a link to the original source. Generally, excerpts should not exceed three or four paragraphs. Do not plagiarize. Do not steal someone else's bandwidth by posting images that are hosted on another website. Democratic Underground is a high-traffic website, so posting images from other sites will cause their server load to increase dramatically, and might even cost the website owner money. If you wish to post an image from another website, you must contact the owner of the other website to get their consent. Democratic Underground has the ability to block remote linking to images hosted on other websites. If you are a website administrator and you would like images from your website blocked, please send us an email to let us know. Do not link or share copyrighted digital media such as mp3s or DVDs.Wherever possible, please make an effort to link directly to the original source of an article, instead of linking to sites that have re-published someone else's content. This does not address the issues of copyrighted images. Is there a policy we should be following on DU?

Definition of Copyright and CopywritingYou can apply for a copyright or you can apply for some copywriting, but they're totally different things. In the first case, you're asking for a document that gives you the right to publish something. In the second, you're asking for a writing job. Writers often get them confused.Copyright A copyright is a legal document issued by the Copyright section of the United States Patent Office. It states that the person named on the document as the author owns the right to publish the written material designated in the document. That doesn't mean that the person named actually wrote the copy, only that he or she has the legal right to publish it.CopywritingCopywriting is the act of creating copy or content. Generally, the term refers to writing in the sense of creating non-technical material. It's different from the kind of writing tech writers do. Some jobs that call for copywriting are marketing brochures, magazines, newspapers, and consumer-directed communications. If you're a writer, you might be a copywriter.
Uh, I remember when freerepublic was sued--some weeks before Skins's island--the primitives were jumping in joy and jubilation.I didn't say anything at the time, because I knew what was coming down, and wanted to see if the primitives changed their tune. The primitives changed their tune.
I'm wondering if Righthaven has selectively purchased copyrights to select articles that it knew were being used by sites that had deep pockets or useful domain names. Most sites that are being sued likely posted excerpts and linked backed to the source. When people follow those links it would be easy for the original source of the articles to track where those new visitors came from.
soon as you find your manhood all else falls into place.
If Ft. Hood was "workplace violence," then the Hindenburg was an air show.
I don't know if sand glows in the dark, but we're gonna find out.

I'm not going to rejoice in this. If it was only about copyright infringements, that could be handled by a simple takedown request. I don't think it is. These people are thugs using the courts to bully site owners into paying out large sums of money.
I'm trying to find that primitive campfire where the primitives were jumping in joy and jubilation at freerepublic being sued by RightHaven--it was about three weeks, maybe a month, before Skins's island got sued too.
