Sheriff uses food stamp applications to find people with felony warrants

Seven Jackson County law enforcement agencies swept the metro area today to serve 300 felony warrants.

Many people on the list were found with the help of the Department of Agriculture. Their applications for food stamps led police to their whereabouts, according to Sgt. Lane T. Eitel, of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

“We’re not targeting people because they’re on food stamps,” Eitel said. “It’s just another way to find people, that’s all.”

Labeled “Operation Talon” the sweep was hosted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and will serve warrants in the police jurisdictions of Kansas City, Independence, Grandview, Raytown, Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs and Grain Valley.

“(The warrants) are for everything,” Eitel said, “probation violation, forgery like bad checks, drug warrants, stealing.”

can't wait to read DUers comment about how if you aren't doing anything wrong you shouldn't worry about your civil rights. And how if you are poor you don't deserve any.

Felons use you and me as their victims. Four cops were killed in Oakland by a criminal who was violating his probation. Just that morning he raped a woman so when a cop stopped him for a routine traffic violation he shot the cop dead. That's just one example. Later that day he went out in a blaze of fire in a shoot out with the cops.

Don't bring common sense to the argument.

21. do you want the local law enforcement looking through your food stamp app?

it's not about the bad guys, it's about YOUR rights

how many of them are you willing to give up in the name of "safety"? Maybe they should be able to go through everybody's medical records, just in case there is a criminal seeking treatment for something - then they can apprehend him/her when they show up for the next appointment...

Here in AZ they photo and fingerprint you if you apply for food stamps - just getting you used to criminal proceedings, I guess.

Hey DUmmie, employers do background checks and this is much different.

is a potential rapist and murderer and must be tracked down at all costs?

Gotcha.

Yes.

Someone with a felony warrant is someone I think the police (and me as a taxpaying citizen) want to be picked up, DUmbass. :banghead:

Methinks that the hypocrisy is being missed here, and since this is happening in my county, the original article is somewhat incomplete.

The irony being that it is OK for a federal agency (the Dept. of Agriculture in this case) to cooperate with and provide information to local law enforcement to catch felons with warrants, but it is NOT OK for local law enforcement to provide data and assistance to ICE (a federal agency) to catch deport illegal aliens (particularly those with the same felony warrants)......

Duplicity at its finest.......

75. there is a hell of a lot less info on a tax return than a food stamp app
in fact ours go to a POBox
so good luck "finding" somebody that way
they are used as EVIDENCE in the cases of tax fraud against white collar criminals and I am pretty sure they are obtained with court ordered warrants.

food stamp apps are VERY intrusive and detailed about all kinds of personal information, including letters/interviews with employers/neighbors/landlords, people in the home, medical info etc etc

I'm sure it may make some police work easier, but I'm also sure that isn't really a burden that needs to be added to people already at a disadvantage in our society. Discouraging people from seeking help when they need it because of fear comes across as...well...republican, ya know?

I didn't read that the food stamps to the families themselves were denied.

That from a DUmmie who if you asked the definition of fascism three times, you'd get five different answers.

Far be it from them to actually blame the flippin' FELON for creating a situation that would put his/her child in danger. How about this...arrest the damn felon and put the kid in a home where he/she will be properly cared for.

Oh good Lord this dump monkey is actually complaining that the application to get freebies is intrusive.
Hell I'm surprised he isn't bitching that the govt just doesn't know who needs them and who doesn't so that you don't even have to fill out an application. Really doesn't matter. You have to give the post office a physical address when you rent the box. Law enforcement can, and do, request the info!

That is all this whole DUmmie sphinter contraction is about. LE asked for the addresses of some of their outstanding felons to the Dept of Agriculture and were given them. Woohoo big deal, they tapped a resource. It happens all day, every day in every state all over the country to track people with public information. It's not like they were given a copy of their applications, they got current addresses is all. Tain't nuttin but a thang.

Have a physical address AND show a valid ID.
