WASHINGTON, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Elena Kagan was sworn in Saturday as the fourth woman ever to become a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Her hand on a Bible, Kagan repeated the oath uttered by Chief Justice John Roberts: "I, Elena Kagan, do solemnly swear that I will administer without respect to persons and do equal right to the poor and to the rich and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States under the Constitution and laws of the United States, so help me God."
With that, Roberts shook her hand and said, "Welcome to the court."
Kagan, 50, becomes the third woman serving on the current court, joining Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor, and the 112th person to serve on the court.
