Saudi Arabia: Town Realizes They’ve Been Praying in Wrong Direction for 10 Years…

Riyadh – Worshippers at a mosque in a Saudi Arabian village near Mecca discovered they were praying for 10 years in the wrong direction, a newspaper in the country reported Thursday . . .

(One paragraph later . . . ) Villagers in Hadda, 20 kilometres north-west of Mecca, should have prayed southeast, but instead bent down five times a day in a northern direction.

Someone should lose his head for that. :lmao: :rotf: :lmao: :rotf: :lmao: :rotf:

The alternative is that they follow the surface (Or still equivalent to that, travel through the medium of the atmosphere).  But then, topology tells us it wouldn't matter what direction you prayed, because it would travel through Mecca eventually anyway.

This is a joke, has to be, they were within walking distance to Mecca and had no idea where it was.??

Is this some kind of a Polish joke.??

I betcha if we nuked it until it was nothing but a pale green glow on the horizon the damned sonzabitches wouldn't have any more problems finding Mecca.

Levity aside, having lived in Saudi, the only thing that is surprising about this is that it occurred in a Mosque.  By law, all Mosques are required to have the correct direction of prayer "built in", and therefore pretty much idiot proof.   So someone screwed up during the planning and construction of this particular Mosque.

As a general rule, especially in the hinderlands, when the call to prayer comes, I nave seen Saudis throw their prayer rugs down in virtually any convenient direction, for a couple of reasons.  First, depending on where you happen to be in Saudi, Mecca can be on any point of the compass, and second, Saudis, on average, are an ignorant lot, and figuring out the correct direction for most of them is simply a "bridge too far"......

When not in a Mosque, Islam charges the believer to pray in private when possible, however in the cities, virtually every building with public access has a compass rose embedded in the mosaic on the floor indicating the proper direction (and "prayer rooms" are provided)......even the public parks.

The "Religious Police", or Mutaween (which are found EVERYWHERE), when I was there, all carried a compass and a map to advise believers the proper direction........I suspect that these have now been replaced by hand-held GPS receivers.

Doc,    My first born male baby at the ripe old age of 18 left home to attend Maine Maritine Academy up the Coast in Castine Maine.

First time he had ever been away from family and friends and had lived his life around Christians of all branches and colors.

His room mate was from Malasia and Muslim.  Same age as he but from a culture that could have come from outer space.  This room mate had a scar running down his face from eyebrow to chin caused by an auto accident when he hit a Bengal Tiger---or so he said.

It must have been interesting to see how they reacted to one another at first, my boy at the time was not into any religious faith so was all wide eyed at everything his new friend did.

The Prayer rug he used had a built in compas  to show how to pray and the direction to do so in.

These two soon became thick as thieves, my boy was wowed at the story's of life far away his friend had lived and somehow the Muslim and the infidel grew to have great respect for each other.

They after a year or so began to protect each other, if my boy found a way to get beer, the Muslim would dispose of the evidence.  When Prayer time came my boy would take over for his friend so he could go pray.

This started out with the prayer rug and the built in compas and has wandered off into other things---Sorry.
