It was a busy week for Rep. Lynn Woolsey, who introduced one bill and had another passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.
Woolsey debuted a bill that will add a public option to the health care pools that begin in 2014. The same day, the House passed another Woolsey bill that ensures the development of new technologies to prevent, recover and respond to oil spills.
The public option that Woolsey, D-Petaluma, is proposing is based on a robust version proposed early in the health care reform debate before it was modified in hopes of attracting the votes of those opposed to the idea, Woolsey said.
The option would create a government health insurance plan that would compete with private insurers.
"The power of the public option lies in the lower-cost competition it would offer private health insurance plans within the health exchanges," Woolsey said. "It would charge lower premiums because it would not be profit-driven and would have much lower overhead than private insurers."
