Conundrum. This actually happened to my brother. He knew a girl who happened to have inherited a collection of photos from a family friend. This happened almost 25 years ago. The photos were of Hitler. The woman didn't know what to do with them but it was obvious that her 'uncle' was a personal photographer of Hitler's.

Do you destroy them because Hitler was a monster? Or do you pass them on so they can be added to the historical record.

I say destroy the photos. You?

1. Make sure they get to a historical society. Hitler and his shit is one part of history that we cannot afford to forget.

4. Auction them for a lot of money.

Why destroy them?

22. I would never wish to exploit that part of history in a monetary way. You could still have them evaluated and then donate them to a museum, and you could use the value as a charitable donation if you want, but let's face it: anyone who capitalizes on human suffering even in some small way is heading down the road of ghoulishness.

I'm glad someone has a conscience.

5. What is your rationale for destroying the photos?

15. Hitler was a monster and he doesn't deserve any more attention than he already has.

Destroy the photos and say a big **** you to him and his attempt at being human (a lot of the photos had children in them - with Hitler looking mighty uncomfortable).

I don't know what the woman did or if she was telling the truth about her conundrum. She asked for my brother's advice though and I can't remember what his reaction was.

38. Covering up history never ends well.

Hmmm.  No wonder things never end well for the primitives.

12. We should burn them right along with books we don't like.

That was sarcasm, in case it wasn't obvious.

The pictures are historical, pure and simple. They need to be preserved.

50. History. Consider that these may be the only copies that exist of those particular images. In fact, it's quite likely. Somewhere, someone is looking for those photos to complete a historical study of Hitler. One of them could be the key to an entirely new direction in research into this monster.

Destroying them could lead to a dead-end in someone's research. They belong in an archive where they can be accessed by scholars. Never destroy a collection of historical photos. There may be no copies of those images in existence.

History must be preserved - even ugly parts of history.

I dunno.  If franksolich, who has a college degree in history, were to come across such a thing, franksolich would probably destroy them.  But that's an argument for another day.

If one's conscience found profiting from them troublesome, they should be donated to a museum, the Smithsonian if nothing else, or perhaps the Imperial War Museum, with an affidavit giving as much provenance as possible from the lady whose relative left them to her.

Personally I have no problem with demonstrating the triumph of Capitalism over National Socialism by flogging those babies for every damned dime that could be squeezed out of them, and if some nutcase wanted one for his Hitler shrine, that's X thousand dollars he doesn't have to spend on greater mischief.

So there.
